Dorm Internet sux :(

I don't know what type of connection it is, but I'm getting some pretty good download/upload speeds (3-5Mbps average, 1518 kbps according to an online speed tester down and 231kbps up) compared to my DSL at home. Browsing webpages and downloading stuff gives me no problems. However, when I play online games, I'm getting horrible lag. I could join a CS:S server where I get 10-15 ping yet the computer still freezes every few seconds because of lag. I know its not my computer because single player runs perfectly. This happens with Halo PC online, BF1942, and even WCIII (i keep lagging out) The lag stopped a few days ago, but started again yesterday. What do you think could be causing it? BTW, it still happens with all my firewall/antivirus programs shut off and I'm plugged straight into the ethernet port in the wall.

When ever I see these type of complains I wonder if we need to start a collection for the poor people.

May be we can convince our legislator to legislate special laws.
Every 10 years old has to past an Exam for on line game competency. If he passes the 75% tile, by law he/she should be guaranteed a free fast Internet connection with No lag.:thumbsup:

The only hard part would be to determine the age Span for the free service. 10-12years ,or 10-22years, 10-82years.

Only me and 3 other people on our entire floor (that I know of) has this problem, so it's probably not the university doing anything to stop gaming.

Could be. You may be in a penalty situation. You can shape users who exhibit certain traffic patterns (like gaming, large downloading, port scanning, etc)

I know my school has some boxes setup, can't remember their names but if you get the port information for the games and foward it on to a net Admin and ask to have the priority bumped they might very well do it. My former boss had games at the same level as aim I believe. His thinking is that gaming should be up there because it's what some people do instead of drinking and theirs nothing wrong with that.
