Doozie of a problem. Anyone for a challenge?

Okay. No one can tell me what the hell is wrong, not Apple, not Linksys, not a soul. This is apparently my last option and I hope someone here can tell me what the hell to do.

I am running 2 Linksys WRT54G wireless routers with a wireless bridge between them (using Alchemy altered firmware which allows such things to occur). I have one PC in the basement wired to the main router (which is also directly connected to the DSL modem). I have one PC that has a wireless card on it on the main floor. In the attic I have 1 PC and 1 Mac wired to the remote router. All the PCs can connect to the internet just fine. The Mac gets the shaft. The wireless bridge apparently works seeing as how the upstairs PC runs on the internet flawlessly.

From the Mac, I can access and communicate with the remote (attic) router but not with the main (basement) router. I have confirmed all settings with Apple and they say it SHOULD work. I called Linksys and they say they're products WORK with Apple...but they don't support Apple nor can tell you how to get the damned things to work with an Apple. I verified my ethernet card is working properly by connecting the Mac directly to the DSL modem via PPPoE. I just recently connected the Mac to the main (basement) router and it STILL can only see the remote (attic) router and not the main (basement) router...that it's directly wired to. It is being assigned an IP address by the basement router.

Some other stuff that may or may not help you.
Mac: eMac running OS X 10.3.6
PCs: all running Win XP SP2
The reason I am kinda stuck with Linksys is because they are the only routers that can do the wireless bridge function (they opened up their firmware or something and someone patched it...and it works). If that were not the case, I would happily switch to NetGear who I have been able to run on...especially seeing as how I don't really like Linksys to begin with. However, that would leave me with the daunting task ot running wires from the basement to the attic of a 100+ year old house.

Any ideas?

There is one computer on the main floor, one in the basement and two in the attic. The one on the main floor is the only one with a wireless card (Christmas gift to my little sister-in-law) so moving it to the main floor would not help.

What's worse...it doesn't matter which router the Mac is wired into, it can only see the attic router and not the basement router.

Linksys said that their Routers are compatible with Mac.

Did they say that "Hacked" Routers are compatble too?

WRT54G

That's the exact same model that I have. I have two WAPs, actually, one is a WRT54G and the other is an Apple AirPort Express. I have had no problems with my PowerBook and the WRT54G. In fact, I don't think I've ever had a problem connecting my PowerBook to any of the WAPs at work, school, and in airports.

Have you tried upgrading or downgrading the firmware on the WRT54G? I know both 3.01.3 and 2.04.3 work fine with my PowerBook.

Would be interested in learning what you find out... I have a similar problem.

My brother's business has a G5 with an AirPort Extreme card in it. The Linksys G router is at the other end of the building. The PCs in the same room as the Apple can connect to the wireless network fine. The Apple won't connect to the Linksys, and it won't see the wireless network.

All the guy at compusa could suggest was to try another brand of router.

okay ladies

This is what i want u to try

log into your router, find the part where would state about wireless connection, look for something that might state OPEN SYSTEM , or OPEN AUTHENTICATION ( this has to do with encryption) MAKE ure its set to OPEN not SHARED nor AUTO.

also Some linksys routers , change the preamble from short to long premable

hopefully that will help you out and u can try chaning the channel to 11

I've got a couple of questions and ideas for you..

Is the Mac getting an IP address assigned by DHCP? Is it on the same subnet (first three numbers are the same) as the PC's that work?

Have you tried to swap cables between the PC and the Mac on the remote router to see if that makes a difference?

Have you tried to move the Mac's cable between switch ports to see if that makes a difference?

Are you sure that you haven't connected your MAC to the WAN port on the remote router?

Assuming you're getting an IP address that's on the same subnet as the other machines...

Can you ping the PC on the same router as the Mac?

Can you ping the other PC on the main router?

Can you ping the main router?

If those are yes..

Check your general network settings (DNS, subnet mask and default gateway) settings on your Mac and on your PC's. Are they the same? They should be identical, except for the last number in the IP address.
