Door opening on its own

Two incidents happened last night that got me very curious. The doors to all the bedrooms in the house do not have locking capabilities. However, one is able to close it shut and the door will stay close.

Sometime between 12AM and 2AM, the bedroom door was wide open. I did not open it nor anyone in the house. I made sure that it was closed before leaving for the couch to watch TV. I woke up slightly after 2AM to find the dog running in and out of the bedroom.

The door knobs have circular handles, so unless the dog can grip the handle tight, then he would not be able to open it. Anyway, I closed the door again and went to the computer room to lay down on the bed there. I took the dog with me and made sure that the computer room door was shut tight.

A few minutes later at 2:58AM, the door opened. This time the dog was lying on the floor, so he was as surprised as me when it opened. At the same time, the AC had turned on automatically to keep the temperature set at a specific level.

This may sound spooky to some of you, but I am curious why the doors opened on their own. I suspect that air was probably sucked out of the vent temporarily thereby slightly decreasing the pressure of the room. The difference in pressure was enough for the doors to open.

However, there are a couple things that might debunk my theory:

- I do not know much about central cooling (i.e. how it works).
- I've tried pushing on the door while it was shut and was not able to open. I've also walked into the door accidentally and it still did not open.

Any thoughts?

Nah, there's gotta be an explanation for it. For instance, two months ago at 3AM the stereo system in the computer room turned on. Sinead O'Connor's reggae album was playing pretty loud and that startled the heck out of me. A few nights later I stayed up till 3AM and kept watch. It turned out that the timer of the stereo system was messed up causing it to turn on every 3AM. I didn't want to dismantle it, so I just took out any music CDs, so they wouldn't play automatically.

Simple explanation: The door is out of plumb and the hinges are not aligned properly.

I think you are correct with your analysis on the HVAC - especially if the door was not primed and painted on all six sides. I've seen changes in temperature and humidity 'warp' a door as much as one-quarter inch in a very short period of time.

Then again - best call Betelgeuse

Next time it opens, go over right away and see if it shuts properly...it could be that something is contracting just enough for it to shut solidly during the day, but not at night.
