'Doomsday' seed bank to be built

Norway is planning to build a "doomsday vault" inside a mountain on an Arctic island to hold a seed bank of all known varieties of the world's crops.

The Norwegian government will hollow out a cave on the ice-bound island of Spitsbergen to hold the seed bank.

It will be designed to withstand global catastrophes like nuclear war or natural disasters that would destroy the planet's sources of food.

Hope we never have to use it... Still a cool idea 😀

Norway is just plotting world domination after the war. Those evil norwegians can't be trusted.

I'm sure the USAF and USN are adding a new target package as we speak.

The US has one of these in Iowa or Ohio or someplace like that. Read about it in Nat. Geo. several years back. IIRC it's 7 stories underground. Which made me laugh a little, cause what happens when it floods :Q

Sounds like it could also be a good hedge against various environmental disasters, natural or manmade. Reminds me of a book: No Blade Of Grass

Science Fiction classic. From the back of the book: It began simply enough when an Asiatic virus destroyed the grass and grain supply of the entire world. A mass slaughter began as nations murdered their own citizens so that some might live. And then there came a time when every man lived for himself without laws or morals. It was then that there was no hope for civilization, because there was NO BLADE OF GRASS.

Sounds like a cool book. I'm going to have to check the library for it sometime soon.

They should just put the DNA sequences on a USB flash drive or something and give to Sven to bury in his backyard.

the water stays out because the vault is air tight? and air molecules are smaller than water molecules?

inside a mountain on an Arctic island

That has to be one of the most useless places to be stuck with a bunch of seeds. You'd have to travel hundreds of miles just to get to good farm land.

sail boat?

If the world is destroyed, I think they'd prefer Americans not survive.
