Of note:
GS: Will Doom 3 be bundled with any specific graphics card packages, similar to the Half-Life 2/ATI Radeon deal?

TH: [Pauses] There's not anything about that that we can talk about.
That would be interesting.....

Of note:
Medium quality uses compression for specular, diffuse, and normal maps. This still looks really really good but compressing the normal maps can produce a few artifacts especially on hard angled or round edges. This level gets us comfortably onto 128MB video cards.

WTH?
77 views and no one is hyped about the possibility of getting Doom3 in the box with a 6800U? If the price was the same $500, that would be like an instant 10% discount and having the fastest card to run the game?

No one like me cares about the 128 MB on the cards and the possibility of artifacts from texture compression?

Sheesh, sorry to bore you guys!

How do you even know the possibility is with a 6800U? There's been mention of a bundle with the x800 Pro and the 9600 XT.

I don't, it's what I'm hoping for? I was unaware of any 9600XT rumors, but think that would be most amusing to get a game with a card that will barely run it.

D3 being bundled with ATI cards is a store sale, not from ATI direct. I think it's Comp USA is giving you Doom 3 if you buy an ATI card. It is NOT an agreement between iD and ATI, unless things have changed since yesterday

Good read rollo, thx.

Wow, a 128 meg card will have to deal with artifacts and medium quality... what gives !
Time to use that agp aparture thingy !!! .... oh wait, this feature is a piece of &%##. To think I was laughing at people buying undercloaked card with 256 meg of ram.

besides the graphics being ground breaking and the third installment of one of my favorite series (grew up on doom), I definitely CAN NOT wait to hear the sounds in the game. My favorite things about games today is the depth of sounds programmed into games. Besides gameplay, and before graphics, sound is the second most important aspect in a game IMO.

Thanks for the post Rollo

good read!

Doom3 will run fine on a 9600xt with the appropriate render path.

I think they will bundled with 6800 Ultras as one option. When I upgrade my GT to Ultra that is what I am hoping for. Then I will have 2 copies of Doom 3.

It also says (as rumoured a few days ago) that to play at Ultra levels(uncompressed textures) you'll need a 512mb video card, otherwise you might experience some chopiness from time to time.
So it is my understanding that you can also wait and save some money to get a 512mb gpu when they will be available.
I wouldn't pay so much for an Ultra and still won't be able to use appropriately uncompressed textures.
GT can handle the work fantastically IMO,if we look at the benches.

Finally some validation for my decision to NOT upgrade to a 6800GT/X800 Pro yet. I'll wait for the 512MB cards to be released and snatch one up then. :D

And I'm starting to get fidgety about D3 running the way I want it to run on my system. I hope I'm impressed... :Q

Well, I for one am glad that I bought a 256MB graphics card. Mega, hope you have deep pockets :)

Still, a 512MB ($600+?) card just to have no compression feels to be a pretty high price to pay. Think about the bandwidth that bus would have to have between the GPU and the memory. Not to mention the chip quality/speed that would need to be there to handle all that data flowing around. I think this is perhaps a case of software exceeding hardware, and likely in a big way. Those first few 512mb cards are not likely not to do this game justice as mfg rush to patch together a solution.

I'll keep my 256MB 5900 Ultra for now and maybe upgrade to a 6800GT.

Well, Carmack and his associates placed a great deal of time on making this game playable for most everyone. I like the fact that he didn't just code D3 for the people with Elite systems. So everyone can have fun with ID's new (4 year old) baby.

I've been patiently sitting here with my 6800 GT waiting for the 3rd. The deal doesn't effect me if it's true, but I hope it's true for all those who are going to purchase one soon. :)

I will agree 100% with you if playing with medium details can still be a gaming bliss.
I don't doubt Carmack's words(who am I to do it anyway) but I want to see this in practice.

This pretty much confirms it... I won't be upgrading till I can get my hands on a 512 MB video card =)
