DOOM3 - a word about the game...

I have to say that before the game came out, I had my doubts, I mean I've seen before cases where everybody's talking about somthing, and then when it comes out it sort of sucks. I'm not talking only about graphics (which I'm sure most of the folks in this forum will be concerned with), I'm talking mostly about playabilty. I mean even if the game looks nice and all, but its playabilty sucks, then the game is practicly worthless. But, Doom3 has done a great job as far as playabilty goes, this is deffinitly, one of the best games I've ever played (along with max payne I & II, and farCry). This game has got me on the edge of my seat from the first minute. It's fairly scary playing the game at 1 a.m, I even felt the hair on the back of my neck getting stiff a couple of times. I must admit I was a bit relieved when it was time to go to sleep, the game is tireing (in a good way), it keeps you tense at all times. One word on the graphics, since I currently have a Radeon 9100, I can only enjoy only the lowset settings (almost), but even so it looks much better than many games I played before, and if you don't have the cash to get one of the high-end cards, you'll do just fine with this one (although I don't belive it'll last much longer with new games coming out).

yeah , i know exactly what you mean. a lot of times, i feel a little intimidated just to play the game. The sounds really get to you. Like say you're in a room, and as you go through a door and are about to enter another room, the sounds/music get all louder and change as you go, and get more and more scarier, and you know something big is about to happen. i haven't felt like this since i played the first Silent Hill on Playstation.

Sorry, I know these isn't the forum for these type of questions, but...
Does anyone know how I can find out all the secret codes for those rooms with ammo/storage (the ones you have a key pad to punch in the code), I've been looking all over and I can't find them.

The codes can be found in the emails and voice recordings of the peoples
PDA's that you have downloaded from along the way. Just read through em
and listen to em as you get them.

And I completely Agree....this is the best game ive ever played. I had my doubts
also...but I haven't felt this way playing a game since way back when I was blasting
through doom (or doom 2 i guess)

How did they make such a great game that plays at 800x600 and doesnt even make me
think its low...isnane.

the use of these codes is plain retarded. it makes you read the PDA, which has done nothing but waste my time hearing people ramble on. Plus, all the useless emails....ugggh. the codes are typically in emails with 'Security/Ammunition/Health' headers.

And its not like the codes are difficult to get, they are virtually gift-wrapped in locations right next to the storage lockers.

anyway, some of the major issues concerning Doom3 playability were explained in
Firingsquad's review

anyway, i really enjoy the game except for a few completely lame game-design decisions by Id

thanks for a review from the other end of the spectrum (9100). i'm building a new system and am debating whether to go buy an overpriced 6800 or hang on to my old 9200 until prices drop. i think i'm gonna sit tight and deal with low resolution for a while. if nothing else i'll appreciate the better graphics when i get the new card.

Yeah the game is well, scarey ;P I was a little disappointed in the gun department. Am I the only who feels that well, the pistol, machine gun, chain gun, and shot gun were made under powered? Not to the extent of the amount of damage but they just look and sound like weak guns. I play a lot of counterstrike and those guns on HalfLife 1 give you a sense of more power than the guns in doom 3! Oh well its a decent game, nothing revolutionary in gameplay but the graphics blow you away. Will this game stand the test of time? Well who knows, it gets praise for its graphics but in a year or two those wont even matter. ID has built a very nice engine that will be sure to power some great games like the quake 3 engine. I can't wait for HalfLife 2! Doom 3 is just too dark and takes places in too many small rooms :p

Same here.
Its sorta like that with FarCry, where ive just passed in the game, the bit where you have to kill those 5-6 trigens to get that key off a scientist, i stepped into the building, and i can hear them crawling around, but i cant see them.
Im not too into scary games, i like tence games, like DX1 for example, but scary games arnt my cup of tea. Despite this, i do have D3 on pre-order, and will probably play it a little, but beyond that, my primary uses will probably be limited to showing off my PC to my mates, performing benchmarks, and to have the ability to say i own everything Doom! lol.
FarCry, I love the fights against the mercs, but im really not looking forward to the massive indoor sections ive heard about with all the Trigens, at that point, i`d probably stop and start replaying the outdoor levels again cos they were ace.
Im guessing that HL2 will be just a solid shooter. Not scary at all. Which suits me fine.

Well, if scary slow creepin isnt your kind of game then your right you wont like it.
The darkness is probabaly 60% of what makes the game great for those who like
the type of game it is. Having to use the flashlight, switch to a weapon when yous see something,
which means you just made it dark again ant cant really see the thing well is awesome.
Who'd of thought such a simple concept could add so much to a game..

"hey, screw it, how about we just turn the lights off the whole game"...

awesome :)

After all the hype surrounding the game I was really hopeful that it would live up to everything. After playing for the last week I really do think ID has done a great job of extending the original feel and concept of Doom. It's different in ways I didn't expect, the atmosphere is down right amazing at times, and it's definetly one of IDs best single player games.

Sometimes I do feel myself craving an all out gun fight with a room full of monsters and so far there has only been a couple of those situations. It does seem to be getting harder as I progress through the game which is great.

I totally agree. The pistol sounds like crap.

Yeah, I agree the weapons sounds could have been better. I'm not sure but I'm suggesting, that maybe it was done on purpose, since all the other sounds are amazing, the creepy feeling you get walking through some rooms is absolutly amazing. And there's that laughter sound... Dude, this one is spooky sometimes. Like BoomAm, I also prefer the solid (basickly no monsters - like BFV, MOH etc.) FPS, without too much spookiness, but I think to miss on this game is a real loss. ID did a wonderful job here - which wasn't all that easy considering the expactations level, well worth my money.
