My issue is with people who get caught in the hype and shell 300 bucks on a video card, based on non-existent games.

well, all the future FPS games are gonna be based on the doom 3 engine

DOOM3 cannot be delayed, so certainly not "again". There has never been a release date (at least not by id, and they produce and finance the game)

The official release date has always been: "When it's done." - Everything else was just wishes/guesses of publisher/game magazines

What was the 'original' release date? Wasnt it like 2 years ago?

2003 has always been the earliest they'd get it out. They annouced it at E3 to give people a taste, but this is the first hint of it being even remotely delayed past the original targets.

There was no original target date. ID software was the first company to coin the phrase "it'll be done when it's done" in relation to software. Doom3 never had a release date, and not even a release year. They released some teaser footage to show off to the world that it was in development and that you could expect a sequel to Doom2, but that's it. They'll release it when they're damn well ready, and we won't see a true release date until they're about a month or two from honest release. The opposite would be Duke Nukem Forever... where they keep quoting release dates but when they see that whats out at the time is kicking their games ass they choose to release at a future date and reprogram the whole engine so it's ass can be kicked again by the stuff that will be out at the new release dates date.

(god I'm pretty sure that didn't make sense)

ID has and will always say "When it's done" and, I know I shouldn't, but I get kind of annoyed when people say "who cares about doom... hl2 is coming out". Am I the only one that remembers that half-life wouldn't even have existed without quake? It was built directly off ID's engine. They are the pioneers and always will be. I am very much looking forward to HL2 but I also know that ID will be the people that revolutionize everything once again.

I guess I just have a lot of respect for what ID did with the genre and as long as carmack is running the show, I always will. Wedge and the other guy from Quake Command, who ended up at Valve were producing amazing things since their first Quake mods, and HL2 looks insane.

All of them? The HL2 engine looks lightyears ahead of the Doom 3 engine. Valve would be stupid not to license it.

They might licence it, and they might not. One of the downsides to doing licencing is that if done id style, you have to commit a lot of resources to developer relations, make your top programmers availible to licencees, etc.

Huh? I am an unapologetic Valve fanboy, and to me HL2 looks like a much more interesting game than Doom 3, but Doom 3 is much more impressive visually. I have a hard time seeing how anyone would see HL2's engine as "lightyears ahead of the Doom 3 engine."
