Doom ported to the iPod

I don't think it'll play too hot. Shooter controls on the touchscreen work wellish, but not good enough to have fun with it IMO.

Carmack says that it will be the first game that will show that the iPod is a gaming console.

Doubtful but we'll see. There are already plenty of decent games out there. I'll check it out if it's well received.

My concern is the conrtols. A next gen touch should have more than one button on it.

I'm prety sure it is for all touches/iPhones. I think older hardware will be at a slower framerate though.

Too bad Doom Resurrection has been revealed to be an on-rails shooter: FAIL

I still think the iPhone is vastly overrated as a gaming device. It does some games very well... like puzzle games where you can just drag pieces around with the touch screen. But I have yet to see any sort of racing or action game that wasn't a joke. Beyond the lack of buttons I find any sort of tilt controls to be absurd. They may work, but why do I want the screen I'm looking at to be tilting around?

I have Wolf 3D on my iPhone. ID did a good job with the controls as long as you use the tilt function for turning. It takes some getting used to though. I was wondering if they'd bring out Doom. I'll have to fire up the old System 8 Mac and get my Doom collection out.

Which doom is this a port of? I don't see how is it a port if it is a on-rails shooter.

I guess 'bastardization' is a more accurate term than 'port' in this case. I guess that's how they deal with shitty iphone controls

DO NOT WANT

I remember playing Doom 1 on my GameBoy Advance. An old/overplayed franchise isn't going to prove the gaming worth of a platform.

What sucks is that id these days seems more concerned with exploring alternate technologies than actually exploring new and innovative game play. Doom on a iPod and Quake in a browser. Yay. 🙁

I ended up giving my PSP to my GF after a few weeks. I have about 30 games on my Touch. It absolutely rocks for puzzle games, tower defense type games. Multitouch is awesome on Sway (a good, interesting/different game) And I personally like tilt controlling if the game implements it well. Like Snail Mail, Motocross 09 or Rolando. I probably charge my Touch 2 times a day because I'm always picking it up to play something. There are a lot of games where the controls are horrible, but some developers seem to have figured out how to work with the touch screen and tilt. I don't want to play super involved games that take 80 hours to beat on something with a 3.5" screen that fits in my pocket. For casual gaming I'd take my Touch over anything.
