I installed it, configured it, performance is fine, looks okay, sinlge player is ehh...but FarCry seems like a more flexible engine. I am tired of looking at the same 3 colors already. Multiplayer is less fun then QIII and will not hold my interest very long...thanks Carmack for the 5 year wait and the $60.00 down the drain.

Lol the first impression of the game for me was staring at a bunch of ingame cinematics, so you couldn't be too impresed till you start shooting the sh1t out of everything
 
If you bought it for the multiplayer, then of course you will be disappointed. (NOTE: This may change when the mod community gets rolling.)

If you bought it looking for a "flexible engine", then that's a pretty silly reason to buy a game.

If you bought it expecting anything other than Doom, then of course you will be disappointed.


Doom 3 is everything I (personally) expected it to be. Maybe your expectations are out of whack. *shrug*
 
Go look at iD's goals and then compare them to the one's you're looking for it might've saved you 60 bucks :roll:
 
Ahhh the color pallete, the one and only pass/fail criteria upon which a single player game should be judged. If you aren't getting paid to write game reviews you are in the wrong profession.
 
The game started to get good from the Enpro level on. Finish that level and tell me if you think it still sucks.

This game is so bad that I wont go into details. But I will say this, The original Half-life blows this POS away which, IMO, D3 is a rip-off of.

Yeah, by about 5 years. THe original Doom was released in December 1993, while HL was released in November 1998.

This game performs better than Far Cry (indoors) on my system, plus I consider the graphics to be much better. The characters look twice as detailed to me, plus there is no comparison between the lighting and shadows in the two games. Doom3 PWNS Far Cry as far as graphics go.

Far Cry's only advantage is in the massive outdoor levels where you can explore everything and go anywhere. Doom3 traps you in a maze.

That said, I've never seen this level of atmosphere in a game; Doom3 is truly frightening and immersive. The sound is also surreal; this is the first time I've heard things creeping up behind me, causing me to whip around 180 degrees.

Honestly, Doom3 is incredible. I don't know why people on here insist on bashing it. I'm running it on a lowly 9700PRO and it's gorgeous.

I've been playing Half Life recently and I find Doom3 superior. If they both were made 6 years ago and had similar graphics, HL might edge it out. As it stands now, unless you're running a TNT-2 graphics card Doom3 is the superior game. Even with equivalent graphics (which of course we can't compare), I consider Doom3 MUCH more frightening than Half Life.

Half Life was revolutionary in its day. Doom3 is revolutionary today. Granted, Doom3 didn't push the envelope much in terms of gameplay, but the graphics and sound are too good to be ignored.

No, but they help. It's like listening to a 48kbps MP3 of your favorite music and then listening to the CD. The CD will sound better.

Have you even played Doom3 on decent hardware? I don't see how the gameplay is even much different from HL. They're both linear FPS games where you have to escape from a base crawling with terrible enemies.

Let's hear your details. Typically when someone says "This is my opinion but I don't want to go into details" it means that they have an opinion but they have nothing to back it up with.
 
Everybody has such incredibly high standards and expectations for a game like this, and they are rarely fulfilled or shift elusively at the game's release. Some people want it to be just like another game. Some people want it to bear no resemblence to any other games. Some people nit pick things which have very little bearing on the gameplay like the color scheme and the engine's flexibility (which in all honesty I doubt that you have any crediblity whatsoever to be critiqueing the technical aspects of Doom3's graphics engine). Other people hate it because it's popular, other people try and compare it to other games that aren't even out yet. It is my humble opinion that most of these people either did not bother to read what the game was about before buying it, or sucked horribly at it.

In light of all of these negative threads about the game, here are a few things that I liked about it:

Controls & learning curve: Very simple. Don't need 34 buttons for interaction when 7 or 8 will suffice. I don't like FPS games that have a high learning curve and lots of buttons, it detracts from the story and pulls your out of the game.

Graphics: The graphics in this game surpass anything I've seen so far, even Farcry, but what impressed me most, unlike far cry, was that this game looks amazing even at low res and lower detail levels. Textures are low contrast so as to make AA almost entirely unnecessary.
Plays very smooth on my modest computer and looks amazing on my 33" monitor at 800x600, high, all adv. on.

Sound: Best since the original Half-Life, IMHO. Very creepy, very immersive. I'm playing on the 5.1 setup through my home theater, and the intensity of the sound with regard to position and distance feels right. Echoes sound right. Very scary, easy to lose yourself in the ambience of a room. The sub hits nice and hard when an imp hurls a fireball a little too close. Things whiz by your head and it sounds realistic.

The demons are very creepy and their movement is more fluid than I've seen in any other game. They blend perfectly with the environment, and it gives a very movie feel. The humor is savvy (the space spam for instance) and adds to the not so distant future feel of the game. They also kept a lot of ties to the original games, like the dark, claustrophobic feel and the morbid, undead texture to some of the areas.

I could pull the elitist schtick like so many of the other players on here, but I'll be honest and not say "the game isn't scary at all, it's stupid". The game is creepy, in numerous ways. There is plenty of the loud sudden surprise make you jump stuff, and then there is the slightly more subtle but ever present tinges of evil; grunts, scratches, gurgles, darkness, red vision, disturbing gory cinematics, scenes of hell bent wickedness, demonic murmers, etc.

I probably don't play video games as much as the rest of you. I work my 40 hours a week, don't live in my parents' basement, and my fiancee battles the computer for my time and usually wins. Still, I played the first Doom games a decade ago and enjoyed them to no end, and while I was not expecting much substance with Doom 3 partially because of the hype and partially because of all the effort the graphics engine must have taken, I was pleasantly surprised to find this game an attention holding, immersive, tense, and satisfying experience thus far.
 
I've barely started the game, but I like it so far. The thing that impresses me the most is the attention to detail that immerses you in the game. For example, at the beginning you are walking around and you can hear other people carrying on conversations. When you find the scientist at the beginning, watching the carnage on the monitors by him. And on the way back from the scientist, listening to the mayhem and chaos happening on the radio. Not to mention the detailed designs of each room you pass through. Now, that might be just because thats all the further I got and it gets more generic later on, but the beginning is pretty impressive at least.

Here are my detailed reasons for not liking D3 to satisfy SickBeast.

1. The story line is so "been there, done that".
2. The graphics are not really all that impressive. Granted they look great but so do many other games.
3. The game, as usual, is too short.
4. As usual, ID games like Quake 3 are too "interior". Meaning there are no large areas, everything is too confined and the maps are always in small areas.
5. The game, as all ID games lack color.

And there is more but I wont bore everyone.

And to answer you question about playing on decent hardware I am playing it on a P4 3.0ghz 800fsb cpu, Winxpsp1, 1.5 gigs of ram, on a 7200rpm 8meg cache SATA hard drive with an ATI 9800 Pro playing the game at 1024x748 on high settings. The game runs smooth but I still do not like it. It is totally unoriginal and considering how long its been in developement ID could have certainely come up with a better story line than pulling a Half-life story line of "OMG, Something has taken over the base, we must find and kill and survive" story. And as far as its scary oooh ahhh shock factor I was more startled playing Alone in the Dark 10 years ago. And as I stated before, it is my opinion and if you can't respect that then stay immature, I really don't care. I repect other's opinion, please respect mine. As you see, this forum has 100s of posts regarding the dislike of this game. Sure, most of them are just flamers but I have been playing computer games since the '70's and know a good game and a bad one when I see it.

Dude I respect your opinion, but when you post things like "This game is so bad that I wont go into details." it makes you sound like someone who doesn't know what they're talking about.

That said, you did make some good points, but I'm going to have to refute some of them.

1. You're right, I 100% agree.
2. There is not a single game on the market that matches the graphic quality of Doom3 right now. I would say that Far Cry has 75% of the graphic quality of Doom3, and that's being generous.
3. Again, you're right (I think so anyways, I haven't finished the game yet). This has become typical of the genre unfortunately.
4. That's just the setting of the game. You're escaping from a base. There are no holodecks. You *did* get to step outside for a bit at the beginning though. 😉
5. The color perfectly suits the game. Did you want nice fruity colors in such a dark, morbid atmosphere? It would have ruined the whole atmosphere of the game IMO. There are some bright colors when those fireball-throwing monsters go after you, plus the crazy butchers have some color going on, whether you want to see it or not. If the game weren't so dark you would see much more color.

As for the MP3/CD/vinyl argument, you can't do that. Vinyl can sound better than CD. CD will *always* sound better than a 48kbps MP3. I made the comparison because you minimized the importance of good graphics.

You guys are entitled to your opinions. I'm just tired of hearing about how Doom3 is such a *horrible* game. To me a horrible game gets just about everything wrong. Doom3 is definately not one of those games.
