Just making the point that now that graphics hardware is totally sufficient for this game, it really is neat to take it for a spin at super high res, ultra quality, 8xaa/16xaf with 5.1 DTS and a huge screen at a solid 75 FPS v-synced.

The damn game looks & feels so pretty, and it's super scary too!

I just built a very nice new system and my plan was to reply HL-2, FarCry and Doom 3, I just finished HL-2 and Im about 70% through FarCry and wow it sure is nice to play on todays hardware, lol I have everthing maxed in FC and Im getting 175 FPS.

Oh and loved HL I got the Orange Box so I still have lots of Source lovin to go :)

DOOM is next!!!

Its always fun to revisit older games when you've got the hardware to play them the way they were intended.

I remember playing it just fine on my X800xl. Didn't like the whole flashlight or your gun idea.

So true. I'm replaying Quake 4 now on my 8800GT. It wasn't too too bad on my 6800, but it's nice to max everything out.

My friend can play this with most things on medium and a solid frame rate around 60fps on his laptop- now is certainly time to max out yesterdays most demanding games :p.

If the current trend of graphics>gameplay is any indication, it will actually be square zero.

Two thumbs up for this thread:

I too enjoy replaying older games, especially Doom 3. My 8800 Ultra can do 1920x1440 with 16xAA and 16xAF at over 80 FPS in my benchmark run.

Graphics improvement is nice, too bad I still don't have the patience for Doom3. However, I stretched out my play of FarCry so long that I started on a 9800p, and finished on a 8800gt.

What kind of display are you using exactly that has a 75 Hz refresh rate?

currently i play it on a laptop that is connected to my tv in the living room. it is a 32" lcd panel with a 1366 x 768 Resolution @ 60Hz [60 FPS max w/ Vsync]

I had a sony trinitron 21" CRT that did 2560 Res and went to 85Hz maximum (not sure if it did 2560 @ 85Hz). I played doom III mostly at 1280 x 1024 or 1600 x 1200 @ 75Hz pushed by a 4.2ghz E8400 and 8800GT 512 @ 720/1800/1960. Doom III was quite playable, even with 8xAA.

There's a duct tape mod where all guns have flashlights, not just the shotgun and machinegun anymore ;)
Another "fix" I did to this game was reduce the shotgun spread from 22 to 5. It does the same damage, but now it actually kills things. Doom 3 is a lot of fun after fixing it. I'm trying to do the same thing with Quake 4, but it doesn't seem to work too well. It just breaks the guns.

I'm really getting a kick out of this old games on high settings idea. I can also save a shitload of money if I buy the cheap games on Steam that are a few years old. Hitman 1 and 2 are $10 each.

Definitely a treat to go back through older titles with newer HW. Ghost Recon:AW and Far Cry, in particular, were a very different experience than with the HW I first played them on. .

19" LCDs @ 1280x1024 typically can display at 75hz. I know the three that I have can...

The first time I played Morrowind was a few years after it came out with a new card and the hi-res texture packs. It looked and ran great. Then I went back and looked at all the old reviews and they all complained about their systems choking on the graphics.

Together with having to wait for PC versions months after the console release and my slower upgrade cycle, I'm usually at least a year behind in games. It's nice because I can get bargain prices and newer hardware really makes the graphics shine. The drawback is that after the initial release hype, some multiplayer games lose a lot of players as they move on to the latest and greatest.

I'm playing Gothic 3 right now and the current patch seems to have worked out most of the bugs. I haven't run into a single problem that people were complaining about. And I got it for only $3 at CC on clearance!
