Just played the game. Wow. Even at lower resolutions, the detail quality is amazing. Never seen 800x600 look so good (playing on my work PC during lunch). Man, id sure has some good programmers. John Carmack must have a dark mind. I've never played a game that is so dark and scary. I highly recommend this game, just don't play right before you go to bed.

i was personally very impressed with D3, surpassed the bench mark that the original HL set (for me) and which nothing has lived up to since that time, until now. Higher end system with a 21", lights off, surround sound up, definately got me scared more then a number of times, love that.

as far as painkiller, i think i laughed through most of that game, pathetic in my opionion, i think all they did was take serious sam and put better graphics on it, i didn't see what the big deal was about. nothing but a gib fest like serious sam. the boss monsters in that game were very nicely done though, i'll give them credit for that, but the rest of the game wasn't very atmospheric.

HL2 has a high bar to reach now...

Played this on a LCD screen projector by myself in the dark of course (due to LCD Projector). OMG! It was freaky... I had to stop playing after awhile... I'll stay on my LCD :p

I must have it!!

:( Poor old radeon 9800 is going to choke, I am looking with envy on the 6800s.

EDIT: Is it more fast paced like the old doom.. or more like Painkiller, Undying??

yeah . . . amazing graphics . . . blah blah blah

Doom III is BORING as Hell. :)

no really . . . stop and use the PDA, switch betyween flash light and gun . . .

i look at it this way, it is a very pretty $45 benchmark.

:p

If you want SCARY and CREEPY and ATMOSPHRE - granted it wont look as purty - try Thief III - Deadly Shadows. Plus it is INTELLIGENT, has a good story and decent graphics. The Haunted Orphanage-Insane Asylum is brilliantly creepy . . . Doom III relies on "gross-out' more than true suspense.

I like DIII about as well as Unreal II.
\
edit: "Fast paced"? no . . . slow as hell (granted you do get multiple monsters but not like Serious Sam - and your weapons early on are pretty weak) . . . did i mention there is NO duct tape to attach the flashlight to your weapon. :p (at least the battery doesn't drain super-fast like in HL).

Ive waited 4 years for a game I can beat in 2-3 days. :( :(

You would think from all the hype Doom 3 would have a least shread of innovative gameplay. Think again. Gameplay is the same as a normal repetative shootem up game just like the original doom 1 and 2.

i didn't expect ANY innovation (thank god - the "PDA" was 'innovative" i guess) . . . i just didn't expect boredom

i really didn't know what to expect since i never played the first 2. :p

however, based on this one, i wont bother with D4 (unless the demo is brilliant) . . . OTOH, i am really LOOKING forward to NOLF III, Thief IV, MaxPayne III and Serious Sam 2-1/2 (next year) and possibly RtCW (return again?!)

i guess $45 isn't too much to pay for a pretty benchmark . . .

Yeah, i was a little disappointed. It looks great, but the gameplay is very average. Oh well. Hopefully HL2 will be good - or at least, Counter Strike: Source.

I was really surprised how well my 9600 pro is handling it...

Me too. Even runs somewhat ok in Ultra mode. The game blows chunks tho. What a POS Half-life ripoff.
