Doom III Freezing Up on 9800 Pro

I just got everything installed on my new computer yesterday and bought DIII. I tried running it on High 1024x786 with no AA or AF. The first doorway I go through after the first main hallway with the soda machine, soda cans, traffic cones, etc. it froze right when the first video was supposed to play. Screen stayed frozen, sound still on.

I then tried it at 800x600 and made to the next doorway after this and the same thing happened. So I try the Auto Hardware Detect thingy to give me my settings and it suggested Medium 640x480, which seemed really low for my hardware. So I tried it at this setting and when I got to the first elevator, it froze again.

I have the MSI 9800 Pro and I just installed the drivers that came with it, I'm going to try the latest Catalyst when I get home from work. I'm wondering if this is a driver problem, lack of memory problem or what? Here's what I have:

Athlon 64 3000+
SOYO CK8 Dragon Plus
512 MB Crucial PC3200
MSI 9800 Pro
HD, DVD, etc.

Welcome to the forums!

I'd expect updated drivers to fix it. They seem to ship old stuff with those install disks.

Your system is almost as fast as mine is. I would expect you to get similar results. I also have a 9800pro and i use the Catalyst 4.7's. Im 2/3 of the way through the game and have experianced no video lockups like you are. I suggest updating your drivers after a complete removal of the old ones using a tool such as drivercleaner to remove the old drivers.

Are you sure it's the 9800 that's giving you the problem? Have you tried swapping it out and playing with a different grfx card?

I had the problem you have as well as everything in doom becoming pitch black, except for lights in the ceiling. I upgraded my mobo bios...same problem. I swapped out the mobo....same problem. Next, I upgraded the bios of the new mobo...problem solved. The new mobo also solved the stuttering problem I had in UT2004. The new bios supposedly improved RAM compatibility.

Note, that my computer didn't have problems with any other games or applications until it met Doom3 and UT2004..

I don't have any other cards available to troubleshoot with. Haven't gotten a chance to play any other games yet either. I don't have things turning black, though, just the clean image staying on the screen and my CPU usage stuck at 100% the few times I could ctrl+alt+del. When I ctrl+alt+del the cursor shows up in front of where task manager should be, but task manager doesn't show up usually.

I play Doom III on 1024x768, Ultra Quality, 2xAA/8xAF and the game runs smoooth, I love this game! I guess you should install CAT 4.8 to solve this issue, and install the latest Mobo and sound drivers too.
Fern, you're the first guy I see with a Mobile at stock speeds! Go overclock this baby! 😉

No, its not stock, its at 3200+ speeds (not 2600+). Had to keep it lower than, say 2400mhz cuz of the Summer heat. Its in a room with no AC (or heat, so I'll be able to pump it up this Fall/Winter 😉)
