Doom 95... is still fun.

After so many years, being in a PC gaming lull right now, I decided to install Ultimate Doom for Windows 95. Amazingly it works just fine on Vista 64. I connected my Logitech game pad, and configured it to work with Doom.

... this game is still a ton of fun running around with a shot gun, dogding fireballs and everything that comes my way at crazy speeds. Nightmare mode is still too hard though! I can beat the levels on Ultra Violent after 5-20 tries. Not aiming up or down feels really awkward now... but still, this game still kicks ass.

I play doom every week, so awesome. Does anybody else know if there is any way to fix the invisible pinkys? Or invisibility in general, there is always a graphic glitch in win95 played on xp.

try doomsday: http://www.doomsdayhq.com/
its amazingly awesome

you just need the doom doom2 wads from your original game

you can leave it all identical to the original, just improved maps, or add mouse look, 3d models, weapons, etc

no, there is a glitch so that they reflect things that they shouldn't. They aren't static like they were in the dos days.

probably, you can check the folders in your steam directory

steam may use encrypted files, I'm not 100% sure

They're there. Ahhh, brings back memories of me as a kid using a 14.4 modem to download mods to change the pink demons into Barney off of AOL. Good times, good times.

I recently bought Ultimate Doom and Doom 2 off of Steam for a buck a pop, already played through Doom, working on Doom 2. I will look into the DoomHQ mods though.

Yeah, I got Ultimate Doom as well. Waiting to finish Deus Ex (which God knows how many times I have re-played!) and then will jump into it again! :)

If you want something way better than Doom95 or Dosbox, get zDoom
http://zdoom.org/About
It has many more features like high res, full widescreen support, uncapped framerate, many sound and video options, ~console, quake-style key binding, better mouse support, translucency, crosshairs, free look (up/down), and much more. I don't mean to sound like a salesman but it really does make it better like a modern FPS. It only requires the main DOOM.WAD file or DOOM2.wad or the shareware DOOM1.WAD. It also works with heretic/hexen/strife.

If you want multiplayer, get zDaemon or Skulltag. They have servers running all the time.

They aren't encrypted. I bought the ID super pack during the sale and have all the doom engine stuff running through doomsday - works great.

Same applies to Quake and the mission packs, speaking of which:

After a years of "modern" FPS, loading up quake and just barreling through maps from start to finish, blasting monsters, rocket jumping to skip areas with out planning or thinking about what your going to do....is a a blast.

No reload, no alt fire, no NPC, not kill x of x - just simple, fast, run and gun.

I think the longest level took me about 7 minutes, while a couple i got under 30secs - on normal difficulty.

If you like the Doomsday engine, then be sure to check out Qrack, Darkplaces, and nQuake for some really great looking engines on a 13 year old game.

Wow thank you all so much for all of this extra engine information. I never thought I'd be playing the original Doom with 1680x1050 resolution and mouse aim. Great to see online servers as well, I will have to check those out too!

I'm using Darkplaces for single player and ezquake for multi. Yes, it looks much better.

Not a remake, but a retelling.

Doom was a tons of enemies gun 'em down a.s.a.p. Doom 3 is a slower paced 'scary' shooter, less enemies at a time. The story is way more developed.
