id Software has officially confirmed Doom 4, and is looking for hellions to join the game's expanding internal development team.
Mesquite, Tex.-based id said Wednesday that production has begun on Doom 4, nearly four years after August 2004's Doom 3.

"Doom is part of the id Software DNA and demands the greatest talent and brightest minds in the industry to bring the next installment of our flagship franchise to Earth,? said id Software CEO Todd Hollenshead in a statement. ?It?s critical for id Software to have the best creative minds in-house to develop games that meet the standards synonymous with our titles.?

No other details on a release date or target platforms were available as of press time.

id jobs can be found at the studio's official website.

Oh hell yes! I know D3 is considered, by most, to be less than stellar. I agree actually with most of the critisizm in that it had its issues. However, I did find it enjoyable overall (I've beaten it twice infact.)

Seriously--how can you not be interested in what they're doing for D4. :D

Crazy! First screenshot has already been leaked:

Doom 3 just needed to be a little "faster" and less claustraphobic, I didn't get the same feelings of chaos and badassery like I did with Doom and Doom II. Just make Doom 3 with better graphics, add a touch of Quake 4 and Serious Sam gameplay and Im sold.

As one of the few (seemingly) who admits to enjoying the Doom franchise, I hope they put some effort into a back story and character development.

That's the most likely scenario I would imagine.

Sounds good, I just hope they get more original then monsters spawing in front of you all the time and around every second corner.

Doom with a cinematic fell (like COD4, though I disliked the usual lack of freedom to chose your path and zerg spawning NPCs) would be truly awesome.

It's not the franchise, it's the 3rd installment! and I agree, that and something...new?

That screenshot looks amazing. Very realistic shadowing.

Anyway, I liked Doom 3, but it was nowhere near those 90% rankings most places gave it. A solid 70-something, worth a playthrough, then box it up and never bother with it again.

Wait . . . has Doom ever had any story or character development?

ID sees Halo 3 pulling in $300M and GTA IV pulling in $500M and says 'Me too!'

I thought number 3 had a pretty decent story line and a few decent semi-developed characters. The back-end of the story unravels as you find more voice recorder thingies...I thought that was OK, kind of like Bioshock. In that respect, number 3 was a decent step in the right direction. But the gameplay was lackluster, monotonous, repetitive (oh shit I wonder if a demon will be around that corner!?!? yep, just like the last hundred times I went around a corner!), and downright frustrating with no goddamn off-hand flashlight!

Yay, more stuff popping out of dark corridors, I can hardly wait!

I think that type of scare tactic has lost it's effect on me, I now prefer overall creepiness (a la Bioshock) to just 'pop-out from a dark hiding place, try to give the player a heartattack' type stuff. I'll be intersted to see how it turns out though.

I was going to ask if there was a chance this game might not suck, but the first response already took care of that.

Doom 4... wow I'm surprised they're even considering it after the fiasco that was Doom 3 (well, yes, in my opinion that is, not that it means much at all for the industry). It's their time though... if they really want to risk it, so shall it be. To be honest, if Doom 4 is a LITTLE (notice how I made that specific word all capital? clever isn't it? I know I know) less corridors and just a LITTLE more light, and also perhaps if they make it a LITTLE less scripted, then I will certainly consider it.

I'd prefer a Quake 5, actually. Quake 4's single player was great - Doom 3 was a bit repetitive.

Agreed entirely, I always thought that Quake 4 was in every point superior to Doom 3, and that Quake V would be a much better product. I mean let's face it, the Doom franchise had its time, the thing is OLD, and what ELSE can we expect from Doom 4 than MORE zombies and MORE Imps and MORE Cacodemons and yet MORE of "Hell" stuff thrown on the surface of Mars or perhaps Earth, or who knows a completely other planet devoid of any other Doom fluff behind it à-la-Turok from Propaganda Games.

At least in Quake you can dare including newer enemies, new story elements, new twists and turns. That's not the case with Doom 4, UNLESS as I said they actually DO something different from the other Doom games, but THEN, if they do that, why should it be called Doom 4? It wouldn't be Doom without zombies and Imps and dark corridors, but that's exactly what failed in Doom 3... so really, I don't see the point behind it.

I liked Doom 3 well enough. I think people were expecting too much out of it. Look at the previous titles. Walk around and shoot monsters. Doom 3 pretty much accomplished that.

I always look forward to new iD titles. The graphical display alone is usually worth it. Plus you get to frag some baddies along the way. :)

"Doom is part of the id Software DNA and demands the greatest talent and brightest minds in the industry to bring the next installment of our flagship franchise to Earth," said id Software CEO Todd Hollenshead.

So I'm presuming then that this will be made in the vein of Doom II: Hell On Earth then. That was, for many, the best of the series.

What I am wondering, though, is how well id will be able to handle having two development teams. I'm sure with the time it takes to turn out an fps that's more than 10 hours long, id has realized they need to have revenue coming in more frequently. Still, unless Rage is way further along than they've otherwise indicated, this will be the first time they've had two full scale games in development at once.

They haven't developed a good game since the original Doom, but hopefully this one will be entertaining. The world needs more quality brainless shooters.

I actually just finished playing Doom3 last night, and was pretty disappointed.
It was so repetitive and the story just lacked development other than developing how EVIL the main bad guy was. :(
Yeah, we get it, he's EVIL.
The PDAs added some story, but mostly disjointed pieces here and there with no real flow.
The enemies spawning and jumping out of nowhere got old fast, but it happened right up until the end.
I enjoyed Q4 ALOT more. Good story, good character development, variation in playing style (vehicle combat and such) , etc.
I actually felt like I was DOING something.
I have hope for DoomIV, but hope to see Q5 soon as well!
