Doom 4 - id Software Officially Confirms Development

id Software has officially confirmed Doom 4, and is looking for hellions to join the game's expanding internal development team.
Mesquite, Tex.-based id said Wednesday that production has begun on Doom 4, nearly four years after August 2004's Doom 3.

"Doom is part of the id Software DNA and demands the greatest talent and brightest minds in the industry to bring the next installment of our flagship franchise to Earth,? said id Software CEO Todd Hollenshead in a statement. ?It?s critical for id Software to have the best creative minds in-house to develop games that meet the standards synonymous with our titles.?

No other details on a release date or target platforms were available as of press time.

Oh hell yes! I know D3 is considered, by most, to be less than stellar. I agree actually with most of the critisizm in that it had its issues. However, I did find it enjoyable overall (I've beaten it twice infact.)

Seriously--how can you not be interested in what they're doing for D4.

I see this as a chance to redeem themselves and do the series a better send off than Doom3. It's not that I hate Doom3, I just didn't feel it did the classics any justice. I really, really hope they have a non-survival horror game in mind this time around and above all else, have CO-OP in mind.

Well said. I loved Doom and Doom 2 growing up. While Doom 3 was impressive, I generally do not care for survival horror type games, and hated that this was what the majority of the game entailed. The originals definitely had all kinds of trap doors and enemies coming out of nowhere, and even the flashlight aspect of D3 was OK, but don't make the entire game like that.

Yeah, I eventually downloaded the PC mod that integrated the flashlight with the shotgun and machine gun.

they really need to do something about that. I mean, here we are opening a gateway to hell, have a base on Mars, yet they don't have the technology to put flashlights on a gun?

Definitely. Though, I would also ask that the majority of the game not actually require a damn flashlight this time.

I never did complete Doom3.

yes, but it has always primarily been a PC game.

Yes. Doom 3 and Doom 3: Ressurection of Evil came out for the original Xbox. Both are backwards compatible on the 360.

Doom is currently on XBLA.

Doom 3 featured many shadows and you had to juggle your flashlight with your gun to look around, the screenshot is a joke based on the gameplay of doom3.

Not only did they have Doom 3 on consoles, but the Xbox version was (debatably) better than the PC in terms of gameplay.

I'm a sucker for Doom and Quake games, so I'm definitely interested in Doom 4. Maybe they'll make it an RPG? I wouldn't mind having turn-based combat for once, plus some character development. I'd like to see the romance between red marine and green marine get fleshed out, and maybe further explore purple marine's discontent at the mass slaughter of the pinkies, who seem to be trying to communicate with their fireballs, not harm anyone. Toss in a little of yellow marine's sordid past (fathering a child with a UAC scientist, and letting said child be used as an experimental test subject to cover up his mistakes) and his ultimate goal of redemption, and you've got an epic tale.

Those themes really weren't adequately explored in Doom 3, instead focusing on some stupid hellgate and demented scientists. Maybe the Strogg could invade, too!

I guess I'm in the minority that liked doom3. It was dark, it was scary, it was what I thought doom was supposed to be.

there's one room where you walk in and then the lights go off and you can hear the zombies shuffling around you.. you can either pull out a gun and light them up, with only muzzle flares to guide your aim (note: this is fun) or you can use the flashlight and its melee attack (note: this is even MORE fun!!)
