DOOM 3 with sikkmod, wulfen and monoxead textures

Hi good folks.

I have been messing A LOT with Doom 3 (3 disc version) lately, fist trying to figure out how to run it at 75Hz+. It involved using "com_fixedtic 1" and turned out to be impossible without the game running faster (speeding up).

Now I'm struggling to get sikkmod + wulfen textures + monoxead textures to work. For this purpose I shall call a pk4 file a pk4 archive, so as to avoid any confusion with loose (upacked/extracted) files.

As I understand it I need to copy the textures into the sikkmod folder, right? But what I'm struggling to understand is how exactly are files read by the game.

More specifically, what is the prioritization between files in pk4 archives and extracted files?

You see, some files in the wulfen pk4 archive are also in one of the sikkmod pk4 archives. So if I just copy the wulfen pk4 archive into the sikkmod folder, won't those files collide, i.e. lead to conflict which will crash the game?

Yesterday I kept the sikkmod pk4 archives in the sikkmod folder, i.e. I did not extract the files. Then I extracted the files from the wulfen pk4 archive and the monoxead pk4 archive into the sikkmod folder. But at some point in the game when loading a new level, the whole thing crashed. I believe it was because some of the texture files in the sikkmod pk4 archives are the same as the extracted loose files from the wulfen and monoxead archives.

Am I wrong? Could the crash have something to do with my DoomConfig.cfg instead? I'll copy the errors in here if/when I get them again.

Edit: Need to specify that I'm using Doom 3 v 1.3.1, sikkmod 1.2 and wulfen 2.0

I think it must have been me messing with the config that did it. I removed the whole sikkmod and reinstalled it and the textures, and all is good now.

Still would like to know the answer to my priority question though.

I don't have an answer to your priority question, but I am curious. What is the purpose of making Doom 3 prettier? It's pretty much universally considered a bad game that was pretty. Are there that many people who really like the mechanics of the game enough to mod it to be prettier, or are there mods that make it not suck, or what?

I can understand if you just really love the game - hell, I'm one of those (few) people who liked Far Cry 2 rather better than Far Cry 3 - I'm just surprised to find there exists a modding community for it.

I loved FarCry2. Awesome game, IMO.

Why in gods name are you messing around with such an old, mediocre game?

Do any of those mods at least brighten the game so you can see wtf you are doing?

Is it true the vanilla Doom 3 has better graphics than BFG edition?

I had heard they used console textures for the rerelese which are lower res than vanilla PC textures from 2004...

The biggest change is the lighting as it makes the atmosphere completely different in the BFG edition, everything is a lot brighter in the BFG version.

No. Actually some of the textures have improved in the BFG edition, such as certain metal gratings and character/monster faces.

Doom 3 is one of my favourite games of all time.

Wow, what a wild diversity of replies. And none of them answer what I really asked about, heheh. :)
Oh well, let me answer some of them then.

Universally considered bad? Please explain: http://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/doom-3/critic-reviews. But anyway, that's beside the point. My point is: why bother with reviews if you really like the game, which I do. :)

Do any of those mods at least brighten the game so you can see wtf you are doing?
Heheh, not really. Well, you can see more in shaded areas if you turn on soft shadows. But I don't because it kills the framerate. And besides, I think the game was designed this way to be more creepy and force you to use the flashlight. It's not very realistic though, because in reality light would bounce off walls and objects and light up those pitch black areas somewhat.

No screenshots? Mods, please delete this worthless thread.
I'm guessing you are half kidding, but here you go you screenshot junkie :p: https://www.google.no/search?q=doom...S7ygOCv4KYAw&ved=0CAYQ_AUoAQ&biw=1560&bih=886

Doom 3 was awesome.
If not awesome then really great yes. :)

Why in gods name are you messing around with such an old, mediocre game?
Obviously I wouldn't if I thought it was. :p

Lighting, shadowing, atmosphere, gunplay, level design.
Agree most with the first three. :)

I really enjoy playing Doom 3. I find it really scary when playing in the evening in a dark room. Almost afraid to go around the next corner. :) I only really use sikkmod for the bloom and parallax effects. Other things such as soft shadows and SSAO hit the fps too much. Besides, SSAO has some artifacts so I can't use it.

Oh, and a tip for those interested: I found (one of) the absolutely best AA settings for this game, it's 4xMSAA + 4xTRSS. Looks amazing. It smoothes out the edges perfectly and gets rid of the "flicker" effect on floor gratings/grids.
In NVIDIA Inspector just select 4x [4x Multisampling] under Antialiasing - Setting and 4x Supersampling under Antialiasing - Transparency Supersampling (not sure how Radeon cards do this, sorry). I found these settings by looking at the comparison shots here (4th post from the bottom): http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=350337

I loved doom3 when it came out.
It had a revolutionary lighting engine with all real time dynamic lights. (swinging lights overhead casting real shadows everywhere)

It also had a software built in 5.1 surround sound engine that made the game sound amazing for everyone!

I used to Map/level design in doom3 (q2 also) and I loved playing with the physics and lighting.

I even made a spotlight, exciting right? well I included a control station with a programmed GUI with UP left Down Right arrows to move the spotlight in real time. This has never been done before in any game. I loved it so much.

I still have the map I made (4 player DM) and the custom gui console.

BFG edition honestly sucks. No editor.

I thought Doom 3 was awesome. Planning to replay with BFG Edition. Far Cry 2 was abysmal. Plastic chickens that just fall over to the side when you shoot them... Plastic non-destructible objects that just get pushed around by bullets. Same identical enemies again and again... Boring gameplay. Repetitive firefights...

The only thing that was good is the graphics and the guns. I'm surprised no one made a mod to make this piece of crap half-way descent.
