Can only buy 1...

Leaning towards Farcry. Good choice? Many seemed to rave about how good this game is... Why?

What's the draw?

I played through both, but I lliked farcry better. The draw for me was plush outside enviroments vs the closed in spacestation setting. I also liked the AI in Farcry better than the scripted mobs in doom. Truth be told, I did have fun in both games but if I could only choose 1 it would be Farcry.

I played the big games of 2004, I'd rank them at Far Cry > Doom 3 > HL2. On the other hand, according to polls, most here prefer HL2 > FC > D3, just goes to show you tastes differ. Like Yoss, I liked the beautifully rendered outdoor scenery, especially at night. I liked the feel of a tropical island, I thought the boats & vehicles were well done, liked the AI as well.

Not to put down Doom3 - it's also an awesome game, reminiscent of a good space suspense flick. Most who're used to having everything just the way they want it, often thanks to cheat codes, were unable to enjoy it for what it was; a different game. Not the typical shoot-em-up, but something based on suspense and limited vision.

Yes you can't go wrong with Far Cry! Shouldn't there be an expansion out or something by now? I remember a few months ago it was only $30 compared to $40+ for the rest of the games at Walmart, maybe it's cheaper by now?

I've seen Doom III and Far Cry sell on the forums for as low as $15 shipped. You might be able to afford both by buying used.

Here's another vote for Far Cry over D3.

In addition to the remarks above, I would add that the gameplay in FC is rather non-linear with large maps. There are several ways or paths to choose in achieving your objective. Whereas D3 is very linear IMHO. And D3 is very repetitive.

From what I hear D3 is pretty repetitive whereas FarCry wasn't. There was usually something new around each turn.

With farcry you will play through half the game enjoying it immensely, the last part will be so so, but not too bad, some love it.

Doom3 is just dreadful from the start

I cant pick up a winner honestly.Doom 3 scare the hell out of you and is more straight forward a a FPS.But i really enjoy both really.Far Cry and Doom 3 are kick arse games.

But IF you have a NVIDIA card and want the best performance for your game...get Doom3...

IF you have an ATI card and want the best performance for your game....choose Far Cry

The gameplay in Farcry is nice, but I absolutely hate the engine - compared to the Source engine (which is what I'm used to) it doesn't even come close; whereas the Doom 3 one I actually like (it's closer to the Unreal/Quake engines which I also play). Doom 3 wasn't a bad game imo, but doesn't have much replay value being so linear, but I think the ambience and sound detail in the game is amazing.

I think the Doom 3 engine will shine when PC's have the power to render scenes the size of Far Cry's maps with Doom 3's level of detail.

*EDIT* Doom 3 did a good job of making me jump... but Vampire: The Bloodline Masquerades did a better job... the part in the hotel, and then again in the mansion.

We are really discussing games, not their engines . . . the D3 engine is as 'excellent' as the D3 game is 'crappy'.

By the time we see D3 engine games, we will have Crytek II engine.games. ;)
