While for most people Doom 3 the game might not be very good, Doom 3 the engine is absolutely the best out there right now by a long, long margin. At least until the Unreal 3 engine is released, it is the best. But the point is that in the next 4 to 5 years there will likely a huge number of games based on the Doom3 engine license. Look at Quake 3, even today new games based on its engine are being released. And Unreal when released was better than Q3 but much fewer games used it engine.

So at until you can buy an Athlon64 dual-proc, a P4 with HT will beat an A64 single core in a lot of the upcoming games. And I suspect those games might be mult-threaded too.

Doom3 doenst SUCK.

Only a noob would say that. You'd have to have something out against the game.

Its not the best, but I wouldnt say its out of games like Painkillers league.
Its an older style of gameplay.. you know, the kind of gameplay DOOM CREATED

Not being able to see.... the whole freaking time? Yeah you won't find that in the original Doom. The lighting effect wasn't scary... it just pissed me off. Therefore Doom3 sucks.

The next slew of BioWare's RPGs will be using UnrealEngine3 which is highly SMP optimized. Toledo is going to pwn in next-gen gaming. If the Doom3 is more SMP optimized by then, great. Intel isn't going to be the best either way.

You have to give id some credit, they did make a very nice looking engine. I personally haven't bought Doom3 and don't plan on it, but I will buy Quake 4.

when the shadows are cleared away by explosions and you are fighting for your life, what is revealed is very speccy, and any game which is actually VERY scary indeed is a masterpiece IMO.

Amazing that people who are supposedly interested in the most performance will disregard comments on what a benchmark is actually testing.

I own an A64, but I believe the digit life article's results to be just as true today as the day it was published. I mean did Doom III change since then? All the other articles linked to are just showing a timedemo, and it has already been explained that the timedemos do NOT use as much CPU as when you're actually playing.

I said it in the other thread and I will say it here:
CPU simply does not matter at the resolution and settings most REAL gamers actually use. Get what's cheap.

Doom 3 was every bit what i expected.

To the people who say its too dark. Its doom, what did you expect? Its not half life, its not counterstrike, its not far cry or wolfenstein or battlefield. Its doom, is the same story, the same plot, the same setting. Its supposed to be dark and scary.

It is the undisputed champion of OGL engines and likely will be until carmacks next generation in ~2008 if not later. To consider it completely irrelevant because you didnt like the gameplay is just childish.

The engine is obviously made for the future with support for enough textures for 512MB cards, multithreading, very advanced physics effects, amazing lighting and shadows, all of which im sure are just a grazing of what the engine is capable of (compare Quake 3 to the latest CoD on the same engine).

There is only one thing i have to say about HL2... LOADING...

People who have actually played the game will know what im talking about. Fanbois that say "OMG HL2 OWNZ" just because its faster on ATi in some charts theyve seen on the internet wont know. (by the way, the game plays great at max settings on a 6600GT @ 1280x1024 with no AA and 2x AF the same for Doom 3 on "high" quality)

I actually delayed getting Doom 3 for fears of wasting my money and picked it up recently cheap at sams'. Im sorry i didnt buy the game sooner, it is great and im thoroughly looking forward to completing the game and getting the expansion.

I thoroughly enjoyed doom3 and I will be buying the expansion the day it comes out. Having played both d3 and hl2 I think I spent more time playing d3. Both games were good and yes the load times were numerous on hl2. That was one game that I was glad I had raptors.
