Doom 3 FPS Cap

I'm looking at the FPS on the Doom 3 demo (using console command COM_SHOWFPS 1) and notice that the framerate seems to be capped at 60 on less graphically intensive scenes and capped at 30 on the more intensive scenes. Is this normal? Also, is there a standard timedemo for Doom 3 I can run and compare to other scores? Thanks.

the framerate is capped at 60.

This was done to stop the possiblility of using certian exploits in multiplayer gaming. You can turn it off for single play if you'd like. I forget how, though.

Found this:

John Carmack of id sofware: "The game tic simulation, including player movement, runs at 60hz, so if it rendered any faster, it would just be rendering identical frames. A fixed tic rate removes issues like Quake 3 had, where some jumps could only be made at certain framerates. In Doom, the same player inputs will produce the same motions, no matter what the framerate is."

Re: the standard time demo. Press ctr-alt-~ to bring down the console and then type in timedemo demo1 and hit enter. Run it 2 or 3 times. The first time is slow dur to caching.

Here's guide to the D3 console commands

Thanks for the help. Does anyone know why the frame cap changes from 60 to 30 though? It's everywhere, but you can see it right when the game starts. If you look at the base entrance and ship it basically stays at 30 and never goes over. Then when you turn around to the rock wall it stays at 60. Maybe the 30/60 cap is only in the demo?

Maybe VSync is on...I think that if the framerate drops below the refresh rate, then it cuts the cap in half, or something like that. I've never used VSync myself though, so I could be wrong.

Turning off VSync got rid of the 30 cap, thanks. Think I'll keep vsync on though, turning it off looks pretty bad.

I was wrong. I played last night and paid better attention. I'm in hell and see the 30fps cap kicking in from time-to-time.

So is there any way of getting rid of the 30 fps cap and still have v-sync enabled?
