It's astonishing that people are surprised that they weren't arrested. For flying a toy around the city.

Pretty amazing shots in that video!

Would it be possible to strap some type of explosive to the plane and detonate it remotely near a target such as the Statue of Liberty? If so, I could see how that might be alarming.

Stop and think for a minute. How much explosives could a RC plane realistically carry?

we are talking fractions of an ounce on that plane. It was a battery powered ultra light rig.
Oh the destruction!

Im sure plenty of people called the police and other authorities.

Why would it be scary that no one called? Its an RC plane, what exactly is it going to do?

that thing could be a low tech Predator. even if it werent hostile, imagine if that thing crashed or lost radio contact in the middle of the city, that could be pretty serious

I really have no idea, I have never flown one. I don't have much knowledge of explosives either, but I seen C4 in movies that looks to be in a small package. But that is in movies, and then I also have no idea how much it weighs and how that would affect the flight of an RC plane.

It's not the size, it's the weight. Those RC airplanes are incredibly lightweight.

My god! A plane that size might be able to carry enough explosives to make a baseball size black mark on the Statue of Liberty!!!

Oh the horror!!! The hugemanatee!!!

And the RC plane in Shadow Conspiracy was able to fire rockets!

Very nice video and such a familiar place to me to boot. Too bad I'm not going back there...

Regarding malicious intent everyone seems to be missing the point.

It would be a big mistake to fly a small plane around with a kg or two of PETN. It would get attention and make future attempts met with swift defensive recourse.

Instead flying around with a barrage of imaging equipment, sensors for data acquisition is smart. One can acquire a huge amount of information in this manner completely active rather than passive and not raise any red flags and have a good alibi to counter such incoming inquiries as for intent.

Terror organizations love to have this data whether its from GPS/videography, wide range photo/radio spectranalysis, audioanalysis, you get the picture. Using a kg or two worth of flash storage instead of a big firecracker is much more effective for preparation of a much bigger event down the road.

Just sayin' ;)
