My female friend got into a car accident today, she was stopped at a red light and the car behind her hit her, and hard enough to cause her to hit the car in front of her. Luckily there isnt too much damage, but she wanted a police report, but the LAPD refused to come to the scene of the accident, saying if no one is really injured and no city property damaged they wont go.

is this normal? i grew up in a small town, but the police would always come.

I think its a population thing. Varies municipality to municipality, but usually in larger population centers, they dont come out if nothings broken or injured.

Makes sense to me.

Cops usually don't come out unless someone is hurt, or there is X amount of dollar damage done (varies place to place). So now that you know this is how things work in the big city ;), how about changing the title since, in this case, the LAPD doesn't suck. :)

So if the police won't come out how do they establish fault? Who's insurance will end up paying? This is yet another reason I am glad I do not live in California.

I wish KC police were like that - when I ran into this lady last fall (just a slight bump), I had to pay a $50 fine to the city where it happened sicne the cop came almost immediately (just driving up the road, saw the accident). If no cop had come, insurance would have taken care of it no problem, but the city wanted some money from me, too. :frown:

thats what i was wondering...i mean this is kinda an obvious accident if the insurance company looks at the car, one with a hit in the front, one on both sides and one from behind...

but in other accidents with only 2 cars how would they know who was telling the truth without a police report?

yeah...that happens in small towns too. That is what exactly happened to my mom in Brighton, MI. Cops won't show if no one was hurt

It's like that in all major cities. What sucks about it though, is that when you go to file a claim, the first thing they ask is "what's the police report number?" W/O one, most insurance companies will not accept your claim.
