Don'tcha hate it when you unwittingly do a job for IT that IT can't do?

I am not IT before you think it. I work for a company that fixes appliances. Sometimes a part goes on back order and can not be found. Then my team gets it and has to find it by calling all over the country.

Well, last week I was working on an Access database and thought it would be cool if I used the web to check the inventories of a few companies.

Well, it took me about 4 hours to write a VBA module that does this and works 99.6% of the time. (yes, I tested it a bunch) After testing, I showed my boss. Her eyes got all big and saucer like, and she told me IT has been working for almost a year to electronicly check the inventorys of 3 suppliers. Well, my module was built around 2 of the 3 that IT was trying to do, and were unable to get to work with any real accuracy so far.

So I wrote a program that cost my employer about $60 of my time. From what I understand this other project was in the 7 figure range. :Q

This coming week should be good 🙂

you will hear no argument from me 🙂 They just laid off 70 some odd percent of the IT department where I work, so I don't want to work in IT. I ould work for a week, fix everything, then be laid off 😛

Sounds to me like legacy "dot.com" IT department in the first place. Probably the ones that were left behind were the ass kissers with knee pads while all of the good ones had the higher salaries and actually knew what they were doing but were surrounded for years by pole smoking morons.

I know for a fact that some people getting the IT jobs majored in something completely NOT related to IT. For example, Art and English. And the guys who studied computers can't find jobs. [i.e. Me] and YES, I'm completely bitter for it. =)

Good plan. Getting laid off isn't fun, eleven months and counting. Woooohooooo, the drafting industry is always in demand. I should take a trip to ITT and slap the sh!t out of my career recruiter.

good job, this doesn't surprise me

IT depts. are full of fluff, fluffy people, non-geeky dead wood, lots of people to fill cubes and make laminated time-lines

I was put in charge of implementing thisprocess with the rest of our vendors. Only problem is there are about 100 of 'em. I am not IT, but from what I have been told, they are making me an office. Next up: asking for more $.

sweeeet let us know how this goes!

Happens to me all the time. Usually minor troubleshooting, but our IT depart of 2 people + helpdesk is really pathetic for a company of 400+ employees. I had the IT manager demoted last week by getting him written up again. (Salary information of all upper managers on his computer! hahahaha moron)
