My uncle seems to think he the all knowing god of computers. So the other day I was talking to him and he said he was having a problem with WindowsXP crashing all the time. He then goes on a rant about how Microsoft really screwed XP up. I offered to take a look because I've been running XP since beta 2 with zero problems.

So I go over and what do I see....The expert is running 640x480 on a 17" monitor, and also has a 1 inch black border around his screen!!. As I take a closer look I see 19....yes 19!! apps running in the system tray!!!! He wonders why it's crashing.

My solution....C:\killuser.exe

Probably had 19 apps running on 128meg RAM. Plus WinXP trying to steal all the memory he had.

I currently have 13 running in systray and 12 in task bar in win2k prof and this is stable as hell! 640X480 on a 17" monitor is lamorama, but I also hate XP. It crashes like a crack addict on my hardware.

so in this case i am considered the computer expert in my family and to my friends... so the other day my friend says:
"hey i got a blue screen in windowsXP that is running on my laptop, i got it after I installed a game, what should I do?"
I said:
"did you write down the info?"
he said:
"no, why?"
I said:
"because without the info, HOW CAN I HELP?!!!"
he said:
"why cant you tell me how to fix it?"
I said:
"how the HELL am I going to fix it without any details?!!!"
he said:
"because you are a MCSE and you also run windowsXP on your laptop!!!"
I said:
"yes, I am a MCSE - but that still doesnt mean i can fix your problem!!!"
he said:
"fine!!! dont help me"
I said:
"maybe you should not be installing games on your company laptop with only 32megs of ram and a 1meg video card, you stupid goofball!!!"

END OF CONVERSATION

Someone called me on the phone and asked me how he could burn some lectures on to a CD (Audio). I told him to use Adaptec Easy CD Creator (as opposed to Nero which I prefer usually, but it doesn't automatically convert the sampling rate). He hadn't even heard of it and for that matter I think even a CD Burner. How do you deal with people like this?

Its nice being "the" computer guru of the entire family. I'm called to support my parents network, my aunt's business, etc. When something goes down, they know whom to call and know my response. No one tries to tell me I don't know what I'm doing, otherwise, they would be out of service forever! Muahahahahaha!

I'm the family geek. I consider myself very lucky though that my family tends to ask me about thing *BEFORE* they do them and hose their computers. My new son in law is also pretty good,he's managed to install ram, a hardware modem and a few other items into his system with just a couple phone calls to me. He also asks good questions and will actually read, print and save info I send him. Lol, I like my son in law, gotta keep him interested oin computers so my daughter can have got built in tech support :D

I hate being the one and only tech support person for my entire family and relatives, the neighborhood, and all of my own and my family's friends. :|

Use a match.

He doesn't know what a burner is and he asked you how to burn lectures on a CD?

It's really annoying talking to people that think they know about computers but really dont know much other than what they hear from others.

The problem with being the Computer Guru in your family and friends, is that EVERYONE turns to you and expects you to know the answer when all they tell you is "My computer keeps crashing!" Blah. :p And I feel to guilty sending them to CompUSA/Best Buy and pay $100 for a format and reinstall.... or even for memory installation! :Q:frown:

I guess the word he used was how do I "put" the lectures on a CD.
