Don't you just love it when companies do this:
My laptop seems to be incompatible with IEEE-1394 / Firewire PCMCIA cards.
So i send the laptop manufacturer an email asking which cards they tested and which are compatible.
This is their reply:

Dear Sir,
Regarding your email, 3220 is an old model we never try any 1394 pcmcia card or 1394 device on this model at that period !
Sorry, we don't have the compatibility list for you .

Best regards

The Laptop is only 2 years old and at that time firewire was THE UPCOMING THING because USB2.0 was not yet on the horizon.
I just send them back an email telling them I would appreciate it if they test it NOW and tell me the results.
Furthermore I asked them if they ever had somebody return the laptop for a newer model.
I think this is pretty outrageous for a hardware manufacturer (especially laptops) not to test his hardware for compatibility.
And especially for PCMCIA cards which are a STANDARD!!! Those damn things are like PCI cards for laptops!

Well stupid posts is what you get when people thread-crap and are called amnesiac 2.0

And some Toshiba laptops have the SAME issue. So that's what you get from 2 brand names.
(And if you don't know: Clevo is pretty big in Japan. But all those Dell-!idiots wouldn't know that)

http://www.clevo.com.tw/ , does seem to have a good company, but w/ $400 Million dollars in US sales, chances are that they make parts for or even make the Tosh & Dell lappys for us here in the states. I'm not an idiot and I own a Dell. As for support around 2 years down the road from the date you purchased the Clevo lappy, do you have some kind of extended warranty, or do you expect Cleve to support you lappy as long as it runs? W/ the speed of change in today's computing world, it's just a fact of life that w/in no time out lappy's are out of date IMHO.

Don't knock amnesiac. His comment was witty and applicable.

As for your problem: It is extremly frustrating, and yes, I hate it.

Unfortunately companies often times do not undertake responsibility for what they should be testing with their products. Thankfully with the internet we can find solutions to these problems more quickly.

Try a GOOGLE GROUPS search for this issue.

I'm the first to understand when a company does not make hardware that is not compatible with future hardware but I EXPECT their hardware to be compatible with current hardware and there were firewire cards available when I first bought the laptop.

Finally they are doing something:

Dear Sir,
Tomorrow I'll check 3220 + Win2000 + Billionton IEEE1394 pcmcia card , since 3220 didn't support WinXP !

Best regards

I really hate how you first have to threaten people/companies in order to get them to do their job.
(I told them I'm a journalist [which I sometimes do as a side-job for a friend of mine] and I wanted to know if they ever had any customer return their laptops because of this or sue the company because it didn't advertise the incompatability.)

Tss, tss [shakes head]
Why couldn't they have done this in the first place when they build the freaking laptop.

I bought one of the first 1Ghz Athlons from Gateway the week they came out and they totally hosed me on it. It was incompatible with my Plextor 8X SCSI CD-R and they admitted there were problems with Gateway's MB and it but they said because I didn't buy the CD-R from them, tough luck. Good god I hate Gateway! Argghhh!
