I just got a call, for the second night in the row, from some number that I don't recognize, at 3:30am. Well, this time, they left a message, and it turns it out it's my slightly retarded friend's girlfriend's cellphone.

I hooked up his internet, he has comcast cable, and a netgear wired router.
Well, even after I told him NOT to disconnect stuff, just to reconnect his PS3 directly to the cable modem, he still does it.

This is the same friend, btw, that swore up and down that his router was causing major lag with the PS3, even though I tested it and it added less than 1ms of average latency to his connection.

So he disconnected stuff, and reconnected stuff, and now it's not working, so he decided to call me. At 3:30am. :( :( :(

I don't answer shit at 3:30am, especially tech support. Please tell us you returned the call in the morning!

I wouldn't call this friend back for until at least the evening, as he clearly can't follow directions - let him stew for a bit.

Set his ring tone to silent.

No one should call you at 3:30 in the morning unless it's an emergency. To do it two nights in a row is asinine.

I didn't return his call, but he called me again this afternoon, right after I put my phone on the charger.

After talking with him some more, it seems as though he didn't actually disconnect his router from the cablemodem. He says he just logged off of Windows, but didn't shut down, with the router connected to the cablemodem, and the PC connected to the router.

He then connected his PS3 to the router (as he should), and he said he powered on the PS3, and it said "DNS error". He power-cycled the PS3, still same DNS error.

He said that he then went back onto his computer, and had no internet connection.

So he says he tried some things, MagicJack wasn't working, so he re-enabled the firewall, and at some point later on that night his internet connection started working again. He was afraid to plug in the MAgicJack, for fear his internet stopped working again.

I told him that if he didn't go on an unplugging spree, like I had originally thought, then it must have just been Comcast that went down, and the MagicJack shouldn't have had anything to do with it.

Edit: He just called again, this time from his MAgicJack. He must have gotten it working again. (I told him to disable the firewall again and just plug it in.)

Edit: Waitasec, that still doesn't explain why he called me the first night. Unless his internet connection went down two nights in a row? (Comcast mainenance? 3:30AM?)

Tell him he needs to update the firmware on his PS3.

edit: At least last time a game threw a DNS error trying to connect I went and updated the system software(like it prompted me to) and it fixed the problem.

I would not even bother returning that call. I get so bombarded with tech support, I don't care about the service levels, dropped calls, etc... I try to avoid it, in fact. :p
