I turned in a paper two weeks ago for my religion class.

I got it back today, and as the teacher was giving it to me, she said "I really liked it - it's an "A" paper, but I had to give you a B."

I was like "WTF, Why?"

She said that I was missin about 5 lines which would have the paper a full 5 pages long, I lost 9 points for that alone. She stated that the paper needed to be 5 pages long, but never stated that their needed to be 5 FULL pages. On top of that, she said I was missing my outline! So i looked at the paper, and it was missing it. The pages were numbered at the top, and page two was missing. It turns out that, before I turned the paper in, I found a mistake that I needed to correct. I went home, fixed it, and the turned it in later that afternoon. When I look the paper home, I left the ouline on my desk :| ANd that was 10 points alone!!!! :(

SO I got an 81 on a paper that was "otherwise a great "a" paper". She said I would have gotten a 100 if those two mistakes weren't on there. Geeze, not bad for writing it the night before it was due :p

Heh, should you really be graded on the paper or how you turn the paper in?

I remember taking an art appreciation course in college, and getting several answers marked wrong because I didn't include the artists virst name ie "van Gogh" with no "Vincent". I'm paying to be taught, not paying to be marked wrong for stupid sh~t like that.

That was my last straw.

I agree, screw the technicalities - grade on the content of the paper!!!!

isnt the purpose of school to prepare you for the 'real' world?

try to explain to your boss that the report you sent out was all about content screw the technicalities, when his boss is yelling at him for sloppy work generated from his underlings.

Exactly.

If I miss something like that in a document I prepare, it could mean getting in trouble with the FDA.

I can see the missing outline, but I've never been required in the "real" world to write 5 pages of documentation just for the sake of writing 5 pages.

Sometimes (well, a lot of times) I will do something embarrassing, and then think about it later and say to myself, "I must have looked like quite a dumbass."

I've been in many arguments over that exact same thing. To me, an assignment that states 5 pages minimum doesn't mean it has four full pages and a few lines on the 5th. It doesn't mean the 5th can be half full. It doesn't mean the 5th can be 90% full. It means you have to have at least 1 word on the 6th page! I always am stuck in group projects where the group gets 1 word on the 5th page and thinks they are done since we now have 5 pieces of paper to turn in. But no teacher/professor will count a page that has lots of blank areas. When they say 5 pages they mean it MUST touch the 6th page! People, please get that into your head.

Ok rant over.

Yes I hate it when I do stupid things like leave one page out. I've done things like that before. It sucks that you did the work, but don't get credit for it.
