That is one of the reasons why the Simpsons are successfull. They can (and have) jumped forward and backward in time without any reprocussions. Kids growing up on sitcoms are kisses of death PEROID... think Cosby Show, Home Improvement hell ANY show that had "cute/funny kids" in them to start. There is no garuantee that those same cute kids will be cute when they hit their teenage years.

Now the Simpsons, and animated show, can do ANYTHING they want with their characters. And keep them true to form (or not).
