I need to upgrade my CPU cooling. The case won't allow me to use one of the better air coolers...too tall, so I'm stuck with using a different AIO water cooler. (Case is an IBuyPower built for AIO coolers) It currently has some low end Coolermaster 120mm cooler...and with the I7-9700k, it tends to run a but warmer than I like. (mid-80's when gaming)
So...given the reviews, I want an Arctic Cooling Liquid Freezer II 240mm. (case won't for a 280)
About 2 weeks before Thanksgiving, it was $90 with a 10% off coupon, making it about $81 and free prime shipping.
"Nah," sez I..."it will be cheaper over Black Friday/Cyber Monday."
Cheapest over the weekend was around $100 plus a few $$$ shipping.

STILL hanging at $100, but finally with free shipping.

Nah. $90 minus the 10%.
If it was an "emergency," as in the existing POS cooler had died, I'd bite the bullet and get one...but fckn fck...I ar poor. (ish)

One of my favorite sayings: Procrastination is like masturbation; you're just fuckin yourself.

I wouldn't call that an ass biting level of loss though, I think you're missing some digits. More like a "glancing smack across the cheeks."

I suppose that's true enough, but I've finally "gotten my wife's go-ahead" to upgrade my PC...I have no doubt I'll do something equally as stupid (or worse) when shopping for CPU/motherboard combos.

best time to buy PC tech is when you dont need it.

i watch the deals and sales for stuff i could potentially need, and if it is a really compelling deal i usually buy 1 on the premise that i will probably build a new rig in a few years. routers, wifi usb dongles, psus, keyboards, mice, fans, ram, smart-flash card readers; it doesnt matter i will pick it up.

for the most part it has paid off, the number of times i needed some part because something failed, or a friends part failed, or my isp changed and i happened to have one in my box of unopened goodies is well worth the money and lack of stress over if i am paying a good price. that and old gpus make diagnosing pc problems by swapping very painless.

[the only time i wasted money was with a set of ddr3. i needed a full pc upgrade but intel was only offering 3-5% increases each gen (around ivybridge to kabylake) so i kept putting off the buy because it didnt seem worth it. by the time ryzen kicked intel off their lazy butts, ddr4 was as cheap as the deal i got on the ddr3. screw you intel.]

anyways, best time to look for deals is just before each financial quarter and year. companies like to unload inventory to clean up their books and storage space. the normal 'just before new gen release and black friday' are less reliable as sometimes retailers like to stagger the discounts over a few weeks before they are willing to hit bottom.
slickdeals and the reddit pcbuilding parts/sale thread will usually give you a good idea if a part is worth buying at that price.

[i am sitting on 2 nib cpu coolers right now, just in case. somebody stop me. jk]

I'm got some NIB CoolerMaster 240mm AIO (white LED) coolers. (That I don't have any immediate need for.)

They have AM4 support out of thre box, but pre-date LGA1700. Not sure about LGA1200.

Spoken like a man that died poor :colbert:.
Nope, he died rich, he died singing. You? Riding side-saddle on the golden calf?

William Blake died of liver disease at 69 while singing hymns. Many of his friends, including his wife, regarded William Blake as a holy visionary with a direct line to the Almighty, and others thought he was as mad as a hatter.

Yeah...sounds like the 240mm version of what I have now. I'll keep it in mind.
