My favorites are the ones that know just a little bit about computers. You know, the ones that know just enough to be dangerous?? Yeah, the one that points at the tower, and calls it the cpu......

While looking through the future shop flyer, my dad was calling the towers cpu's.

Yep. Thats actually what towers were referred to as just a few years ago. He was right.

How so? The CPU is merely one component of the entire system. Call the whole thing a computer, PC, system, anything but CPU! I used to have the same problem with people calling the whole thing a hard drive. "My hard drive won't turn on." What?....ohhh, you mean your computer. Got ya.

Immediate family, yes, I'll help them out. On the plus side, they're in Michigan and I'm in Arizona. Some times it works in my favor, some times it doesn't.

My mom is pretty IT ignorant, but she usually won't break things. My brother knows the software side very well, so he's fine so long as he doesn't have to crack the tower open. My sister is clueless about anything electronic related, so I try to avoid anything computer related with her. She complained that the Sempron 3200 with 1.5GB of RAM was slower than the P4 Willamette 1.3Ghz and 1GB of SDR RAM she had before. I avoid any IT problems with her. My dad, he knows enough to be catastrophically dangerous. Fortunately, he's never up to date with technology. In his view, the Athlon 64 is the pinnacle of CPU technology. Seriously, I got a call about 3 weeks ago from him where he raved about how the new 64 bit capable CPUs would revolutionize the world with 64 bit OSs. Then two weeks after that, he called me again and ranted that none of his applications worked under XP64. To clarify, he is an electrical engineer and his 'applications' are control programs written in the late 80s.

I help some people, but not everyone. I made it clear that I don't want to help everyone anymore and most people respect that. I'm just brutally honest and say that I don't want to do this anymore.

You said he called the tower the cpu. If you get into some old texts you'll find towers called cpu's.

It took a while, but thanks to vista I now have all my friends and family members convinced I know nothing about windows. I tell them all that if they switch to mac or linux then I can help them. Of course linux is too inconvenient and mac too expensive. So I win!
