Don't want your dog? Just dump it in my neighborhood!

My wife and I picked up a dog that was standing in the road in our neighborhood. She was just standing there like she didn't know what to do. Female beagle, maybe 2-4 years old, I really can't tell. I talked to a neighbor who said she'd been out there for about 5 hours. I wondered WTF she didn't do something about it herself, but she was probably waiting for someone like me to come along and make it my problem instead of hers. I'm so glad I could clear her conscience

Anyway, we took her home and are trying to find the owners. Her fur is pressed around the neck in such a way that it's obvious she's missing a collar. If she stayed in the same spot without a collar for that long in the cold (it was about 20 degrees yesterday at this time, without factoring windchill), I would think either she belongs to a neighbor and so she was staying in an area that felt familiar, or she was abandoned there and was staying because that's where her master put her. I'm guessing some asshole dumped her.

I don't get people. If you don't want a dog, why get a dog?

edited title to be more readable.

Eventually I'll have to do that. I'd like to give it a chance, for us to find it a home first, though.

I pick up dogs every time I see them. Depending on the collar situation, I'll either try to contact the owner (sometimes take a quick drive around if it's a neighborhood - sometimes you'll see people looking for the dog) or bring it to the APA/Humane Society to have it scanned for a chip. I leave it with the scanner if there's a chip, and bring it home if not (assuming it's friendly).

It's a solid guess that if the dog is generally clean and has a collar impression, they slipped out of their collar and are wanted. Check with your local pound for reports of missing dogs, get her scanned, and go from there.

That's what I thought at first, but if she was in generally the same spot for hours, you would think the owners would've found her before we did.
