Don't understand the obsession with fantasy football

I like watching. It's even more fun playing it. Going to a football game is a blast but this fantasy football thing just doesn't interest me at all. I'm not trying to bash the people that do enjoy it but I think some people take it way too seriously. Like my two coworkers who argue about it at work nonstop. Drives me nuts sometimes.

it's a way for closet geeks to be geeky without appearing so among their friends.

"D&D? you fricken' dorks!! ahahhahaha!!!....oh...gotta check my FF stats"

It's a hobby. Same thing can be said for people who are big into computer mods, or console gaming, etc.

oh yeah. forgot the addendum...

allows for hardcore geeks to not appear so geeky among their not so geeky friends.

geek: man, wish i could get online.
dude: wtf? you dork, can't you go 1 minute away from the computer
geek: dude, gotta check my ff stats.
dude: dude! hey, what league are you in?

LOL that's actually pretty funny.

I can't really get into it either, but I know people that join every league they can find and it becomes their life. I can kind of understand the obsession: it's like a vested interest in the outcome of the real games, but still overrated IMHO.

It actually gives you some sort of vested interest into the game(or at least players). Plus during the winter months there really just isn't that much to do outside for a good portion of the US. So it's something to spend a little extra time on. Tweaking your rosters and scanning the waver wires for a hidden gem for the weekend is fun if you are good at it.

I won about $200 last year in my league and it actually helped me generate a little more interest in all games being played since you have players on all the NFL teams. Not just your "favorite" NFL team.

Plus at work it gives you something to shoot the breeze with other people about. You ask who they started and give them crap about if that player had a horrible game.

Just one more thing that's relatively benign to help fill your time.

It passes the time when I have to be at my computer during the day. Plus it is a fun way to keep up with the league and the players.

Yup like I was saying in the other thread, it's like "D&D for jocks with too much time on their hands". ;)

When $ is involved... it's much more exciting. Eleven of my good friends and myself threw in $100 each this year. The winner gets $600, 2nd place gets $300, 3rd gets $200. 4th gets $100. It makes me want to watch the games so much more - I'm going to be an NFL fanatic this year... I usually only watch the superbowl.

Nope. Just doesn't interest me. Hearing my coworkers talk about it all day pushes my interest even farther away.

I pretty much felt the same way until I joined the ATOT league here a few years ago. I had a lot of fun. Mostly it's the competition, like in any sport, and the fact that it relates to one of my favorite activities.

From what I've seen it really isn't geeky people who are way into it. Most big sports buffs (who stereotypically speaking are not geeky) are waaaay into fantasy sports

I like it and play each year but what gets me are all the posts on here from people seeking advice on trades and such. If you can't manage your own damn team, don't come here looking for us to manage it for you.

We do not care about your team, unless we are in the same league as you and then if we give you advice it certainly will not be to help you make your team better.
