Don't think Cool'n'Quiet is working right on my system

I have an Epox 9NPA+ Ultra with an Athlon 64 3200+ CPU and the latest BIOS. I have the latest AMD A64 XP SP2 driver installed, have Cool'n'Quiet set to Auto in the BIOS, and have Minimal Power Management selected in Power Options.

When my computer first starts up, System Properties shows my CPU at 1 GHz instead of the 800 MHz that I read it's supposed to be, and after a few seconds, it goes back to 2.01 GHz and maybe sometimes will drop to 1.81 but no lower than that.

What gives?

Isn't Cool N Quiet's purpose is to lower the MHz if not needed and raise it when it is required for intensive applications such as gaming?

Yes, it should be idling around 800 MHz and only go up marginally with mild use like internet, IM, etc. Instead it's nowhere near that, usually at full speed.

The System properties page is not a reliable clockspeed measurement. Use something like CPU-Z to get real time measurements.

C&Q will drop you down to a 5x multiplier IIRC. That would be 1Ghz if you are not OC'ing.

Wow you are very right. CPU-Z shows about 1 GHz while System Properties is still showing 2.01. And the multiplier shows 5x. Thanks!
