Dont swim if you have lower back problems?!

I just read a disclaimer form for swim center i'm thinking of joining.

if you have any of the following, please check w/your doctor first. it lists the standard stuff like heart problems, high blood pressure, etc.

it also lists lower back pain.

I thought swimming is good if you have lower back pain.

Anyone know why you shouldnt swim if you have lower back pain?

I can understand high blood pressure and heart issues due to increased blood flow and what not... but aquatics are used extensively for rehabilitation of a variety of injuries including back if I'm not mistaken. I can't think of any reason that swimming would be bad for your back. Kinesiology undergrad btw, not saying I'm infallible... just that given my knowledge of human anatomy NOTHING comes to mind. Maybe someone else can shed some light on this.

because if your back cramps up or spazzes out while you are swimming YOU CAN DROWN

It all depends on what sort of swimming you are doing. Certain strokes are fine if you have back issues. Other strokes use your back a lot and would probably put you in a lot of pain.

It doesn't say not to swim, it just says to check with your doctor first. Back pain can be caused by any number of issues and some of them are fine but others might have a bad effect on swimming.

If you have backpain caused by muscle issues - swimming is good

If you have backpain caused by ruptured disk - swimming is bad
