Don't pick photography as a hobby...

I just did the calculations, and since October 2005 I've spent $2,120 not including taxes and shipping. Please people, stick with your P&S's or else you'll go broke. 😛

I got this today though 😀

How much do you spend on your hobby, and what is it?

Not really that expensive considering I have spent over $40k on my new hobby since March of 2005.

That's my plan 😛

I don't really have any expensive hobbies unless you count computers...but even then, I've only spent about $400ish in the last year or so...

Tuning, racing, etc.

Well, me and my dad also went half on a 70 Corvette Stingray resto project. That's more of an investment though.

I've dropped over $25k on flight training and flying around over the last few years. Holy cow I never totalled it up before.

Espresso is my main hobby involving semi-expensive equipment. But it's actually a cheap hobby.
My grinder will last at least 10 years with proper maitenance and a couple burr replacements. $1500-$2000 gets you an awsome espresso machine, but a commercial model will run $4000+. However they do last forever.
And the beans, you'll be spending far far less than starbucks that's for sure. I  my espresso hobby.

It hits hard and makes you think "WTF was I thinking?" 😛

~$6k in astronomy. Mounts, telescopes, eyepieces, filters, tools, etc. etc.
~$3k in photography, mostly for astrophotography. I'm not that good unfortunately.
~$25k in wine (winemaking supplies, vineyard, etc.) although it's not exactly a hobby
~$5k in coffee
~$8k or so in music which primarily consists of a digital piano
~$6k in watches.

That's all I can think of at the moment. Many of these aren't so much hobbies as they are interests/passions; I guess there's not a big difference.

Motorsport is the second most expensive sport. (Sailing is #1, but it's not very common, so let's say motorsport is #1 for our purposes here.) In motorsport, it's very typical for a single team to have more invested in a weekend of racing than the event host has. Tires, brakes, etc. are very expensive, and you WILL go through a whole set of brakes and several sets of tires in one race. That's not even counting the fact that you have a good chance of totalling a very expensive, custom hand-built beast of carbon fiber/fiberglass/aluminum/titanium.

F1 racing takes on the order of hundreds of millions of dollars for a single season.

But I digress... even if you want to do it cheaply, fast cars are expensive.

A friend was just commenting on how much I've spent on my camera setup. Let's see what I've got since January, since I first picked up my D50:

D50 + kit lens: $629
512MB SD card: $50 (before the huge price drop around March/April)
2GB SD card: $42 (after the huge price drop around March/April)
Sigma 70-300: $150
Nikon 50mm f/1.8: $110
Sigma 105mm Macro: $295
Nikon SB-600 flash: $190

All-in-all, I've spent almost $1500. That's fvcking insane now that I add it up..........

EDIT: Add another $100 for a copy of Nikon Capture that I forgot about, so make that total well over $1500......

4.6? Most bang for the buck: use a cobra supercharger

Read my sig.

If I were to get a SC (not until warranty runs out), it would NOT be the Eaton M-112 (which is on the Cobra and Lightning) It would be a twin screw Whipple charger. Dyno sheets show that 10psi gives my car 489hp at the wheels......11psi gives it 505HP

500 to the wheels.... damn. When you have that much power to play with, don't forget suspension and brake upgrades. That'll help you offset getting out of trouble as fast as you get into it.
