I can't believe it myself but for some reason the silly dimm's aren't working out with me..I'm trying to install a 32 mb pc 100 stick on a pcchips mobo(socket 7) top gun mmx board..for all my luck I can't get it in there without one side popping out. Is it maybe the cheap motherboard? I can install it just fine into my socket 7 gigabyte mobo...any suggestions/.?

Just pop open both latches on each side of the DIMM slot, slide the stick in equally, provide equal pressure from the top, and when both latches click in, the RAM is seated correctly.

Yep, I know how to properly install ram but it just isn't working right..is it possible that some motherboards are just really cheap? Like I said I can put any stick of ram into my gigabyte motherboard but for some reason this pc chips mobo isn't working with me..

Take it back to where you bought it. Or post a message for anyone who has a similar motherboard. Call the manufacturer of the motherboard and speak with their technical support. Odds are, if you are having this problem, someone else probably did too.

I once had a motherboard that had 8 EDO RAM slots. Someone gave me a bunch of 8 megs ram chips. I was able to put them in all the slots except the last one. I tried and tried. It just would not go in. I called their technical support and they were well aware of the problem. They offered me a newer board (since they didn't carry this older board any longer) which worked out great for me. They just sent me a current version!

Thats right, it could be proprietary ..and PC chips is definitely the elcheapo of all mobos IMHO

You guys aren't going to believe this, it's not in all the way, barely connecting and I had to push down on the ram after I moved the locks into place to get this to work but the mobo is recognizing the ram even though it's barely hanging on...wacky...now the computer is stuck at the dos prompt after it's trying to load into windows..I checked the mobo manual to make sure that the simm's and dimm banks are okay..and it's looking good..I'm going to try and format the hard drive and put win98 on this puppy and see if that helps out a bit..I think a run into bios might be a good idea too...hehe..I think that the overall problem is with the "el cheapo" motherboard..this thing really is sad..but since my parent's gave it to me I'm not going to complain..I'm using it to help me learn how to network because I can't afford the MCSE classes right now...THanks for all your help!!

It could also be the actual pcb of the ram, I once had a cheap stick of pc133 that wouldn't seat right in any board I tried it in, and finally took it back....

I have seen many of these PCChips boards. Flashing the bios and installing memory is a big pain in the butt - going back to the SS7 boards. What is happening to you is pretty much the norm for these "throw-away" boards.

Stop!

Were you using EDO RAM earlier? If you were, you may have to set the voltage before you install any SDRAM. A pal fried his P166 this way. There was this crackle from the mobo and then it went dead. Refer to the manual (search for it on the web if you dont have one) and proceed accordingly.

If you are comfortable with taking the cards & stuff off before trying, do this, it will give you room to manuever. Make sure you have plenty of light.
