A Gardena man was ordered Thursday to stand trial for allegedly killing a businessman who laughed at him when the meat fell out of his sandwich at a doughnut shop.
Ronald Eugene Murray II, 26, is accused of punching and kicking 56-year-old New Jersey resident Mun Jang so hard on Oct. 1, 2011, that Jang died two days later in a hospital.
"(Jang) went there to get an ice cream," Deputy District Attorney Jennifer Turk said. "The next thing we know he's been beaten to death."
Murray and Jang, who did not know each other, had patronized Donut King at 15032 S. Western Ave. at 3:30 a.m.
Jang, staying nearby while on business in Southern California, sat with a friend at a table.
Murray sat at another table with a friend.
During a preliminary hearing in Torrance court Thursday, Gardena police Detective Mike Ross testified that Murray purchased a sandwich and began to eat it before the violence erupted, Turk said.
"(Murray) took a bite and some of the meat fell out," Turk said.
Murray asked the clerk to give him another sandwich at half-price. The clerk said no.
Jang laughed, sparking the crime. Murray, Turk said, punched him and kicked him in the head.
