Dont know why this worked, please explain someone

I have serial ata hard drive has been working fine for about 3 months, i got up one morning and my computer wouldnt quit trying to boot up from floppy, wouldnt boot from cd no matter what the boot order was, but when i moved the cdrom from primary ide to secondary it fixed it. Now part 2 to my question i am about to buy a burner, do i have to put it on slave of secondary cable or can I connect to primary IDE port.

Well, secondary wouldn't hurt unless you want to burn on the fly, but on my system I have: Asus P4P-800 Deluxe: SATA drive on SATA 1, 2nd HD on Promise PCI controller, DVDROM on Primary master, and burner on Secondary master. Everything works fine.
