don't know if this be technical (it's about apple)

why doesn't apple use any of the ibm designed powerpc chips instead of using motorola's? if they used a power2, 3, or 4 chip in those boxes they'd be so much more attractive

power4's are REALLY REALLY expensive! I wonder how complex the mobo has to be for them.

and yet they'd still ship it with a one-button mouse 😉

They do use IBM CPU's... The PowerPC line was desinged, and continues to be designed by Motorola/IBM jointly.

but ibm doesn't use any of those g3/4/5 processors in their computers (or anything with altivec), and motorola doesn't sell any power2/3/4 processors

I think they're targeted at completely different markets... IBM's at servers, motorola's at desktops/workstations.

ibm's lowest end powerpc unix server uses the 604e chip. the next step up uses a power3 chip. is there some sort of fallout between ibm and motorola?

There is no direct fallout between motorola and IBM as both are developing their PowerPC lines according to
the book-e specification thus providing core compatibility even as their designs are targeting differen markets.
Motorola is actually targeting the embedded market with their latest 85xx line of CPUs and IBM is trying hard
to edge out Sun in the server market with the new Power5 and Power6 series of chips (which will, according
to reports, take a lot of stuff from software, like encoding network packets and the like).

None of the directions is actually really benefital to Apple, since noone needs 2ghz embedded chips. But also
rumor has it that Apple works on their own book-e spec CPU which will be targeted at the desktop market
(and IBM is to produce it, since it's fabs are better than Motorolas). It's questionable however when and in
which form the new CPUs will arive.

And the Power4/5/6 chips are really too big and expensive to use in Desktop computers (I think the Power4
can have "two CPUs in one chip") and their power requirement is enourmous, whereas the Motorola PowerPC
chips only need less than 20 watt (or around 20 anyway).
