desktop and laptop both connecting to internet via wifi (both windows 7)

set ethernet adapters to 10.10.10.44 on laptop and 10.10.10.55 on desktop for file sharing, works great both computers can talk yada yada

laptop still has ability to access internet thru wifi

go to firefox on desktop: "unable to connect" - cant browse internet thru wifi.

I'm still connected to my home router though, the bars dont even have a !

Could this be because the desktop's wifi is a thru a usb stick, and at the detection of an ethernet connection windows automatically assumes to get the internet there?

I tried "how to change default adapter in windows 7" but that doesnt seem to show up?

what should i be searching for to try and fix this? anyone have solution?
