The thing about it is that a standard postpaid account charges alot for texts but if you are on page plus, their $12 plan includes 250 texts, the $30 plan includes 3000, and the $40 unlimited is uh, unlimited. Not to mention Straight talk and virgin mobile have unlimited voice and text plans for 45-60 a month. Its really not too expensive these days at least on the low-end prepaid side of the market.
 
I don't know how to text so I can't reply to texts. I do know how to take pictures with my phone though. So I send an email to myself, print it out, take a picture of the printout with my phone camera and send that back.
 
I used to text "please deposit 25 cents" to a friend of mine that didn't have a txting plan. He didn't appreciate my humor. 🙂
 
Both my wife and I have it blocked. We don't text and got tired of being charged for spam or people testing the wrong number.

My friends think I am a caveman. I get my gmail and work emails instantly. WTF else do I need? If you really want to talk, I think the option of calling and two instant email options are enough.
 
I don't have a texting plan on my iPhone 4S. I use Google Voice. I see no reason to pay $20 a month for unlimited texting. My wife has it blocked altogether.

1) My wife and I both have iPhones, so we can send iMessages for free
2) My friends have my Google Voice number, so I text them using that and vice versa
3) I pay per text for whoever might send me a random regular text (usually less than 6 or so per month)

F**K TEXTING PLANS!
 
I complete all of my correspondence on Sunday after church. That way I can bring it in to town on Monday and be certain it gets on Wednesdays mail wagon.
 
Pfft,I'm still kicking it with an original Razr.

When my wife sends me text messages,I get 3 separate messages since my phone is old as fuck and can't handle all the characters in one text.

Not everyone I know has a smartphone. Very few of my friends have IM and even the ones who do, don't access it through their smartphone because IM apps tend to suck down battery. Email, maybe, but again you're relying on everyone having a smartphone.

Texting doesn't require a smartphone. Very simple and accessible.

As an update: In fact, I don't even have a cell phone as of yesterday. And I'm in no rush to replace it.

Umm, if you arent using a smartphone texting is not simple and accessible. Its a big damn pain in the butt. Smartphones are SO much better for typing, sending, and receiving texts. Also organizing and viewing them.

So you give your friends your Google Voice number - do you receive calls through that as well? Ever have issues with that? Or do they have to call a separate number if they want to call you vs. text you?

I've never been that hot on VOIP on smartphones. Maybe it's gotten better recently but a friend of mine does that and it just doesn't seem to work very well. Drops calls more frequently and sometimes they just don't go through.
 
My coworker.
Did not realize this until after I sent him many urgent texts with no response, I called him & was informed he had texting disabled.

Before I got a smartphone I had a RAZR. It was great at texting. With predictive T9 input you can type pretty fast on a keypad. Certainly easier than using whatever email app is included on that POS, plus to access email you had to pay an extra monthly fee that was more than the texting plan.
 
I hate it when people refuse to answer a phone call then text back instead. Answer your gawd d@mn phone and save us both time.
 
I don't have a text plan, don't need it, see no need for it. If you need to communicate with me you can actually talk to me.

I see no need for texting, that's what e-mail is for.
 
Meh - I don't text, and i don't <gasp> have a smart phone. :biggrin:

I'm amazed people still have contract phone service, buy expensive smart phones and don't even use them. Talk about throwing money down the drain.

Truth be told I use text messaging quite a bit to communicate with coworkers and family, as much as email, possibly more. It's an invaluable tool for me.
