Don't have a data plan on T-Mo? Better check - stealth charge $1.99/MB data addon

Just caught wind of this on Slickdeals... apparently several people have been logging in and noticing additional data charges racking up when they previously didn't have a data plan on their account. T-Mo has taken to stealthily adding a $1.99/MB data charge to previous account that had no data.

Worse yet, it seems they're using this tactic to upsell customers to a monthly $10/200MB data plan, otherwise refusing to remove the incurred charges.

Looks like T-Mo is prepping for the AT&T takeover a little early...

Been going through the SD thread. This is really dirty. You can request a data block on your account, but just opting everyone into this and charging them with no warning is lawsuit territory.

Tmo sent messages months ago about this. People dont read and then bitch about it. Read your statements more thoroughly.

From that thread notification was only from a vague text message sent to the specific phone. Most claim not to have received it. No one actively agreed to it.

Again, average consumers do not bother to read these things. Same with CC bills, they bitch about changes to the agreement but never bothered to read any notifications whether a text, printed on the bill, an email. Yes, TMO could have done this a little more obvious but the consumer needs to be on top of things like this. If you get a text from tmo, read it completely.

I was under the impression that's how it always was - if you don't have a plan, you pay per use - the price does seem extraordinary though.

This was supposedly the notification text:

Congratulations! You can now access the web on your phone and pay only for data you use. Go to www.t-mo.co/ppudetails for more details.

It reads like a marketing advertisement, not an unsolicited change of service notification.

vzw did the same thing years ago. my daughters phone started seeing data use charges, and i couldnt figure out from what. she had a seriously dumb phone. come to find out they changed the service to record and charge for data while surfing their ringtones, apps and games that were available via the phone. this browsing and downloading had previously been included, and never had a charge attached to them. they suck. just like all the rest of them.

this is why carriers have data plans. years ago before the iphone there was a data plan or a pay per MB option. people would quickly access data and then complain it wasn't them or it was a scam by the carriers with the phone interface making it easy.

I wonder how many millions T-Mobile stole and is stealing from its customers. This is just sad and sickening.

This makes sense, my brother mentioned getting these charges on his phone the other week.

Glad T-Mobile is at least reverting their stance.

More like they would accidentally access data for half a second, immediately back out, and get charged whatever the data rate is because of it.

I know my old RAZR on Verizon had non-customizable "shortcuts" where pressing the D-pad in different directions from the home screen would open up various screens. At least two of the directions would open up the web browser. Of course you couldn't change them. If I accidentally hit one I'd immediately hit the end button and I was okay.

Very underhanded, but that's chump change compared to some of the sh!t that Rogers and Bell (the two Canadian giants) pull up here in Canada.

Plus, $10/200MB is really a reasonable data plan. I had to call multiple times and beg, cajole and negotiate to get $10/100MB for my wife's phone on Bell in Canada. They insisted to me that the plan didn't even exist, and that the cheapest data plan was $25/500MB or $30 for 2GB; it was only when I said "forget it, she doesn't need data" that they then offered the $10/100MB plan.

Not to defend AT&T Jr. but they did email me about this a couple months back. It's a 3 minute phone call to get a data block placed on the line. I still don't condone auto opt-in, but we've seen a lot worse.
