Don't go for MSI nf2 mb...

Long story short, I have a 1700 tb'a that can go up to 1.73ghz on my leadtek nf2. I am a bit disappointed w/ the o'c so I get a 1700 tb'b(hit 2.2ghz) and pass the old 1700+ to my brother. I got the MSI nf2 w/ video, after I finish all the driver/software stuff I play around w/ the setting a bit. And I CAN'T O'C IT, not even 1 fsb or .5 mult. Go higher than 133fsb or 11x mult, it won't boot AT ALL. I did try everything I know and still no go. So if you want to o'c, don't go for MSI. :|

Try the latest BIOS from MSI and see if that helps. There's the same problem with the shipping BIOS of the A7N8XD, and it overclocks just fine once you get a better BIOS.

MSI's target market is not oc'ing community, but the general user
that's why they're rich in features but poor in oc'ing options

Believe it or not, I did.

🙁 No idea then 🙁

I've kinda stayed away from MSI for just this reason. They're more a hands-off OEM in my eyes, and don't necessarily cater to the enthusiast's needs. I think I have seen some users with successful OC's with that board, you may want to try amdmb.com or nforcershq.com for more input and references. This board is largely dominated by 8RDA/+ and A7N8X/D users.

So y bother to included all the o'cing setting? And the MSI system monitoring software really suck. when running stock 1700 speed, the heat sind is cool(if not cold) but it tell my my CPU is at 50C. Consider that my 1700@2.2 w/ 1.7v only running 46c.

If you haven't already done so, make sure to set all the stuff to "Aggressive", or "Expert", or "User Defined" and not "Optimal."

The reviews seem to think versions of this mobo have reasonably good OC setting's. There are people OCing with at least the non-video version. I'd say it is almost impossible to not be able to OC at all when the mobo has these kind of settings. If a CPU works at all, it can be OCed a bit.

I don't have a mobo anything like yours. But some mobos I have had have a setting in the BIOS to stop booting if the settings are improper (OCed). It seem kind of nutty, but I do have to disable that in addition to setting OC options.

You shoulda done some research before buying. A quick thread like "best board for overclocking?" woulda been good. FYI I have a decent 1.85GHZ squeezed out of my TBred B XP1700 on an MSI KT3 Ultra, this board and my ram is the limiting factor in my overclock. I have tried this cpu in an Epox 8RDA+ and works fine at 2.1GHZ.

Thx for the input and I have try everything u boy/girl mention. still no luck.
I choose the MSI is because I need one w/ video, and the MSI is the only one I can found in stock and lots of friend suggest that MSI is a good brand. This is the first time I use MSI product and for sure will be the last time. Can't believe it is even worst than my shitty(what people said) Leadtek mb....🙁

what brand of memory are you using? i have heard of people having issues with crucial ram and some nforce2 boards.

I've got a Thoroughbred 1700 going 1900mhz (that's what? a 2300+? 2400+) at home on an MSI K7N2 using just 256 of Mushkin PC2700. Board overclocks fine for me.

If only nVidia would do more work on the Linux drivers...
