Don't get Win XP if you have an Aureal sound card

ugh... XP is horrible. besides making it all newbie, it is totally incompatible with Windows XP

First off there are no Aureal drivers for XP. Microsoft made built in support for Aureal cards in XP but the drivers are minimal and suck

they don't support a3d surround sound/positional sound. When I tried to run the a3d demos it gave en error. Doesn't work in the games either

rear speaker support is gone. Sound only comes from the two front speakers, even when it's set to 4 speakers in the Multimedia section of the control panel

the A3d menu in the control panel is also gone for XP, meaning you cant change the front/rear fading, access the equalizer, get the digital out, change all the other info. there is a program you can download to access this and add it to the control panel but once again it's not an official thing, there's no support for it, and you still can't add quad speaker support. The option in the menu isn't even there

Oh and for some reason the volume in Windows is MUCH lower. Even though all the volume controls are maxed up, the sound is much softer than on Win98 or ME.

And i love my Aureal Vortex 2 way too much to waste $100+ on a Soundblaster Audigy (aureal a3d is actually better than EAX). Guess that means I'm going to have to sell Windows XP

If it's so horrible, why are you using it?

What do you expect, Microsoft to go and develop drivers for Aureal cards?

I loved my MX300 (based on Vortex 2) as well, but I bought an Audigy OEM for $62 (assuming we're talking about USD here), and it has been superior to my MX300 in all categories. There are options besides the Audigy anyways, one of them being the Santa Cruz.

You have three options: quit using XP, upgrade your sound card, or write your own drivers. Aureal has been dead for years now, deal with it.

I gotta agree, aureal is dead whether we like it or not, your gonna have to let go, your lucky MS is supporting it at all. An SBLIVE 5.1 is comparable to your aureal board and can be bought for around $25. If not go for a santa cruz or audigy, but neither are as expensive as your making them out to be....

I'm not a big fan of MS, but XP is ALOT better than win98 or ME, I'd suggest you keep it and replace your antiquated hardware.

Aureal never did get a chance to finish their Win2k drivers before they kicked the bucket. Your lucky WinXP even supports the card at all.

Bad Aureal support in XP? Damn Aureal! Someone should put them out of business for this!!!:|

WAKE UP!!! When a company goes away, the driver development for their products goes with it! Get a new card! I'd never go back to 98se (the horror, the horror) from 2000 or Xp for an old sound card! That's crazy!:Q
