It's the Britney Spears of web services. All the 12 year olds can't stop talking about it now, but in a few months or a year they'll all act equally stupid over something entirely different.

There's a lot of hype because it's free, and because there's a good chance of getting your own personalize email addy.

I use Outlook with 4 different email accounts, and i certainly would never replace those email accounts or Outlook, but having a webmail account that's permanent and that i can access anywhere is definitely attractive.

I trust google's security and reliability. The interface looks better than any web service i've seen.

If you're some elite nerd of course you are going to set up something better. I have better things to do with my time and money than to set up some linux box or whatever to have go-anywhere-email.

And I'm looking for an invite so I can have my lastname@gmail address.

So, Grand Nagus Nerds, you are better than us lowly plebian-nerds in all things geeky and cyber. I hope it feels good 😛

http://www.hotmail.com

That was in response to why people want webmail over a pop mail. As for hotmail, what does that have, a 5 meg limit? And you can't personalize it anymore.

Yahoo offers 100 megs now, but they don't offer nearly the search power that gmail does. And again, no personalization.

Like i said, the hype is simply because there's a good chance you can personalize it for yourself now.
