Don't get ripped off by a rebate 'deal'

I did a search, and didn't see any reposts. I thought this was informative, since I make a lot of purchases involving rebates. I usually only deal with Staples or Dell rebates, which have been 100% reliable so far.

Article

Now, nearly a third of all computer products and 20% of electronics, such as digital cameras and flat-screen TVs, are sold with rebates, according to the NPD Group. In part, that?s because only an estimated 50% to 70% of buyers redeem them.

Over the past year, I have sent 23 rebates and I have received every one of them for a total of $885. Just make sure you make copies of everything. Sure, it's a pain in the ass, but it sure is hell worth the nearly $900 I've saved.

People see the after rebate price and buy it, but they're too lazy afterwards to send in something and get money back. Go figure.

I never buy an item I wouldn't have purchased anyway because it has a rebate, but I always make sure I send my rebates in & if they are for $25 or more I'll drop a $1 to send them via certified mail.

err... certified mail is a little more than a buck. heh. i do it for $50 and up.. certified return receipt. Costs about $3.50 overall... but i have never missed one of those rebates. I can only account for one rebate I did not get. Somehow, it was the one time I did not have a copy of the UPC. I had either forgot to save it or just completely lost the file. But I know I scanned it in.

marketing gets together with sales. Then they get accouting involved.

The discussion follows:

"get this...we can offer 'rebates' and allow retailers to advertise much lower costs to entice customers. But here's the thing.....studies have shown that most of these suckers don't actually use the rebates nor do they comply with our 'rules' for completing said rebate. Let's face it, most people are simply too stupid and/or lazy to actually get the rebate. We enfoce full retail price and allow our sellers to advertise at a much lower price. We are so rolling in it right now.

Gentlemen, I present to you the best idea to rip off the customer ever conceived. The Manufacturer Rebate"

Thank you, thank you very much. You're the man...No you're the man.

Rebates... It's called price discrimination. Getting the customer to pay what they are willing to pay. Smart imo

Rebates are here to stay. Governments love them because they get the sales tax on the full pre-rebate purchase price, as opposed to a reduced sales price. I suggest you quit being an idiot and redeem your rebates. I have never failed to get back my money on a rebate that I sent in.

The only rebate I've NEVER received was from OCZ. I guess they got their reputation for a reason.

I have no sympathy for people who don't send their rebates in, though. Morons.

I bought both LCD TV's from MicroCenter and got the first set of rebates without a hitch. Just sent this set in and already have gotten notified that the check is in the mail for one of them. I did let a check age and lost one for $20 last year. I don't buy rebate stuff if the savings aren't enough to justify the bother. $500.00 on a TV is worth it. I have a $10 one from Hawking that I probably won't even bother with.
