Why would you want your dishwasher on the network?

So you can be a bigger geek tool than your neighbor, apparently.

The researcher that noticed the dishwasher's Web server vuln (please, readers, ponder those four words in succession and tell us they don't make you want to grab pitchforks),

^ This.

What, you guys don't have your dishwasher send out a tweet every time it starts or finishes a load?

Tweet? I record every wash load at 1080p using the waterproof IP camera accessory that I bought on Black Friday for 40% off. I save the recordings for six months on my NAS. For security. But it's not like I have no life; I don't watch all of them.

Considering they sell fridges with 1080p cameras on the inside that you can check on your phone now, it's not that far fetched.
Now that I honestly think about it. I could use this. Every single day my wife asks me if the dishwasher is clean or dirty despite the flashing "clean" information display on the dishwasher. Her family does this too at their homes. My response is always the same "Either look at what the dishwasher says, or open it and look at the dishes; why should I get up to look for you when you are standing right in front of it". But, if she could instead go to a dishwasher's website to see if it is clean, I would be spared that repeated question.

Are you basing your logic on the idea that if the website has a prettier backdrop, she'll pay more attention to it?

That might work on my wife, though I'd tweak it so that the backdrops cycle with whatever the latest image on Twitter's CuteEmergency is.

A variation on xcoffee, the next generation?

Tell your child he/she spends to much time on twitter and that doing the dishes is not a major life event.

How about AI-enabled, network-connected dishwashers that bitch about their mundane lives and problematic owners on twitter?

Heh, my child actually is my dishwasher, and generally dislikes social media because it tends to be full of stupid people (but still has an FB account to help blend in with the normies)

There is no logic to it. Her whole family is ingrained with the idea that you can't touch the dishwasher until you ask someone what state it is in (as if that person would have any clue because they too have to ask what state it is in). So, I'm just hoping that if she asks her phone what state the dishwasher is in, that the answer would suffice. This is just one of those areas where men don't understand wives or their families.

The phone doesn't have to be correct, because the answer is determined as soon as the dishwasher is open. She just needs to have something to ask. So maybe I can just start a website with a random answer. That might be good enough without the security risk of internet enabled dishwashers.

Sounds terrible

Though I will say, we had discussion at home because the dishwasher "clean" light wasn't on and I thought it hadn't been run yet. Turns out that it was clean and a single cup had just been removed from it in a hurry at lunch. I was made fun of for not noticing how clean everything was. There were cups that weren't clean when I looked so I thought it needed ran.

The little things that come up when you live with someone long enough are quite odd and unexpected.

She wore the patch for awhile when she quit smoking, but she hasn't been patched in over a year. Not sure it's a good idea to patch her when she's not even thinking about smoking any more.

Miele has some very nice equipment and is entirely internet phobic. Over the years I have attempted to contact them many times by email. I've tried to contact their sales department, service department and, administrative personnel without any reply whatsoever. We're talking multiple accounts, many different computers and, in both German and English over a ten year period. They have never replied once.

Lol @ this IoT stuff. We live in an age where the government is doing everything it can to spy on and control our every move. And then here we are facilitating that by putting this crap in our houses. What pisses me off about this movement is that it will eventually be hard NOT to buy that crap because everything will be "smart". Just look at TVs. Good luck trying to find a non smart TV. Though I was reading and apparently they only use your wifi? So if you don't configure it then I don't think the spying stuff works. I always had the impression it just used something else like 3G or satellites or something. Seems something to spy on you would not depend on connectivity that you have to actually setup.

Don't worry, I know how to handle this. Bubbleman.exe is annoying but if you break that rock he's hiding behind he's a sitting duck. You can also area-lock him and his AI will short out and go nuts.

(Yes, a network-attached dishwasher was a plot point in one of the Battle Network games.)

Smartphones have been hacked for a long time. Even if you become a total Luddite, everyone else around you has one, so they're gonna get you anyway!

I can see the usefulness of a fridge network connected or a thermostat, but a dishwasher? Da fug? Next thing you know toasters and the shiter will be connected too! "Oh look, it counts the amount of fiber in my shit. I'm low, think I'll eat a few cereal bars. "

Immediately thought of tin hats after reading this

Kaido found probably the best picture for it, so I can add nothing to this conversation. I just wanted to make sure you know that he wasn't alone
