Witness to the crash and beating WITNESSES SAID angry bystanders dragged the driver and his passenger out of the van and beat them Tuesday evening after their rental van careened over a curb onto the steps of a house.
The van hit three women, Chicago Police Sgt. Robert Cargie said. The occupants of the vehicle were then ?attacked by a group in the area,? he said.
?We?re still trying to piece together a motive,? said Chicago police spokesman Thomas Donegan. ?Two people have been killed, so we do expect some charges.?
Police identified the men as Jack Moore, 62, and Anthony Stuckey, 49, both of Chicago. Autopsies for both were scheduled for Wednesday.
Witness Taquita Mixon told the Chicago Tribune that the mob ?hit them with bricks that came off the side of the building.? ?They didn?t have a chance,? she said. ?It was a brutal beat-down.?
Why the van swerved out of control was unclear.
TWO IN SERIOUS CONDITION
The three women were in area hospitals Wednesday morning. Two were listed in serious condition; the third was in fair condition.

At the scene, on the city?s South Side, the van was gone and all that remained was police tape across bushes and trees in front of the building.
Chicago TV station WMAQ reported that police were combing the neighborhood, looking for witnesses and possible participants in the attack.
WMAQ reported that witnesses said at least one of the men was conscious when he was pulled from the van. One witness said people pounced on the van?s occupants ?like rats on a piece of cheese.?

?HAPPENED SO FAST?
Mixon said she was at the window of her apartment across the street when she saw the van swerve toward the house.

?It all happened so fast, it seemed like he floored it or something,? Mixon said.
She said she called 911 and returned to see a crowd around the van, some of them helping the women. She then saw five or six men pull the driver and passenger out of the van and punch, kick and beat them with bricks.
The Rev. Bamani Obadele, who lives nearby, decried the incident. He said people in the community don?t support that kind of street vigilantism.
?It was dead wrong,? he said.
Police said Moore and Stuckey lived near where the crash happened.
Virginia Stuckey said her son was helping Moore move some items from an apartment.
She said her son was an unemployed day laborer and factory worker who had lived with her since January.
?I really can?t believe that anyone would kill someone like that,? Stuckey, 72, said. ?I hope they send them to prison. ... They didn?t have to do that.?
