The article is just link bait,
The additional cost to the city, if any, will be "marginal" because it receives a steady stream of state funding for routine sign repairs and replacement, DOT spokesman Seth Solomonow said.

The life of a typical sign is about a decade, so most of thecity's signs would be replacedin the next few years anyway, Solomonow said.

Who cares... signs don't last forever they're just going to replace them.

And since the current signs have a ten year life....well, it was just an attempt to create a news story about wasteful government spending. That really wasn't.

Fail thread.

Follow the money. What company would make the signs and whose relative is he?

Did ya read the story? They are just going to change the signs font when they are normally replaced.

Oh, btw. I'm pretty sure they are made by CorCraft (State Corrections Dept. i.e. convicts)

I understand it's part of a sign's normal life cycle, but where do they come up with this "safety" issue nonsense regarding the font. Better reflectivity and clarity of the material in night- okay, but the fonts???

I guess if they didn't specify the fonts some places might use cursive, or some other wacky font to show how "special" they were, which really could cause a problem.

why the hell does it cost $110 to replace each sign? I'm hoping that includes all shipping and labor costs. even then it seems high, very high considering how fucking many of them they need

I seen a few of them around already. It caught my eye the first time because when I saw it, it felt like I put my glasses on. Signs are more crispy looking.

I don't mind them at all.

It must be that extra abrasive air they have in NY. I mean, the signs across the Midwest appear to last twice as long through colder winters and hotter summers. Even at 10 years, I wouldn't expect more than an additional 10% of the signs to be replaced by 2012.

On our street corner (residential backwater, not a busy intersection) we have two street signs. The original 1965 one and a new fangled one the county installed ~2000. They didn't bother to remove the old one when they put the new one up.

Wow, and I thought it was a waste of money when my city added countdown timers to all walk lights.

Count down timers are great... when you're driving. You can judge very accurately when the light is about to change and speed up/slow down accordingly.

I haven't seen any but I was hoping something like this was in the works. Around here there are no street signs bigger than the one in the OP on any but the MOST major streets. Since most streets around here are 4-lane with a 40mph limit it's impossible to read the signs until you've practically passed them.

Nah, P&N is healthcare, Islam, Dems and Repubs.
This is just a good 'ol fun municipal tidbit.

No, P&N is where people talk out of their asses until someone calls them on it, then they flat out lie. This article is nothing short of sensationalist and misleading.
