Dont call me for an interview if you dont want to interview me

Garhhhhh!

So last week (Thursday), the night before my ODE final, I get a call from this guy. He said he is with this new startup company and he saw my resume on monster.com and wanted to know if I was still looking for a job. I said yes and he asked me a few quick questions, one relating to how much I was looking to be paid, and told me to give him a call next week to setup a time to meet.

So I was out of town until Tuesday and didn?t give him a call back until Tuesday at around 5pm. When I called him I told him who I was and how he contacted me and asked when a good time to meet would be. His words were "We don?t feel that we are willing to pay someone what you are asking. I think you have been overcompensated in the past and for what we would pay you I could get a full time employee with benefits pushing their salary into the 100k range. So were not interested anymore. Thanks bye."

So I pretty much just say bye and hang up. Now all I said about $ was that my last internship paid me 12/hr and that I was looking for a fair wage for what I was going to be doing. I told him that I would need to take a look at what I would be doing and then we could discuss my pay.

Now 12/hr comes to ~24k a year. Umm I haven?t really worked much with salaries but im pretty damn sure that for 24k a year you don?t get ~75k in benefits. This guy basically wouldn?t even give me an interview because 12/hr scared him off. Well you get what you pay for buddy. I hope your 24k base salary and 75k in benefits (bullshit) gets you a good hard McDonald's worker.

Ya ass.

There was a reason I was paid 12/hr as an intern (the youngest and least experienced one at that). Its because I know my ******, I get stuff done, I work until stuff is finished no matter how late and I am reliable. I sure hope being a pompous asshole gets your company run right into the ground. Please don?t call me at 9pm and interrupt me only to say "you were overcompensated". Bitch you don?t even know me.

Rant is over. Sorry no cliffs.

I got a $12.50/hr job when I was 19, full time with great benefits. As a college graduate I must make more than that or I'll feel like an ass.

I planned on walking if it was less than 14/hr. I need that much for an apartment and to cover my bills and I can get 14/hr at my old job which I liked and was good at. So unless this guy was gonna pay that I dont think I would have wasted my time with him. Im pretty sure (judging by the way he sounded) that he wanted to pay me 4-6/hr for a job where I would basically be a jack of all trades. It was a company just starting up and I would have been doing a ton of different jobs that noone else wanted. Basically an office bitch.

It was a lot of money to me. We (the interns) all started at 8/hr and if you did a good job you got a raise after 3 months. I guess I did a good job.

The last job was in a lab. I basically lived in a clean room for 6 months. This job was an office bitch position that was advertised to me as "a great chance to get alot of experience in every part of a company".

Too bad he wasted your time. He should have told you during the first call that he couldn't afford you. I'm confused by his logic on the salary though..

If youre in a college town...$12 is a lot....too many kids work for free (students like to call it internships)....keep hustling man...youll find something

Sounds like a commission sales job, most want to pay you very little or nothing at all. I actually went to an interview kinda like that where they claimed I could be making 5K per month by 3~6 months and 100K per year by the end of the first year. They were unwilling to pay $10~12 an hour for the first few months while I learned the system or until my first sale.

so judging by these comments it seems like he was the crazy one. I really didnt think asking for 12/hr was too much but then again im not running a company.

When I 1st read this thread, I thought $12 may have been a typo. Apparently not. This sounds like a company you should have no interest in.

Sounds to me as though he had you mixed up with someone else. His statement about the "100k range" makes no sense.

yah. It does seem like the OP was mistaken for another candidate.

That crossed my mind but when he answered the phone I said "hi, this is theopetro, you found my resume on monster and had called me last thursday to set up an interview." Maybe I wasnt clear enough?

🙂 I've had a case where I was mixed up with someone else.

Guy calls me up asking me when I was ready to sign the job offer letter and if $90k was going to be enough. Asked me when I was ready to come in and meet the other team members, etc.. etc.. I played along with him for a moment.. and then told him..
"Um... I haven't even interviewed with you guys yet"..

The guy got really quiet; and I could tell he was embarrased. The week before he had called and asked me about coming in to interview with them.
So, while on the phone, I asked the guy, "So, I guess you guys don't plan on interviewing me now".. .. he said, "i'm sorry.. and he hung up.."..

jackass

I've gotten somebody elses rejection letter in the mail before. Turns out I knew her from school, called her up to tell her. She got my rejection letter.

Yep, definately sounds like a case of mistaken identity. Might be worth a call back to straighten it out. But be very wary of "startups" they are a real gamble, 1 out of 10 shot at an incredible opportunity, 9 out of 10 times ends badly
