COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio Department of Health officials said a raw ground beef sample linked to an E. coli case in Ohio has tested positive for the bacteria.

Spokesman Kristopher Weiss said the department is testing the sample to see if it matches an E. coli strain that has sickened at least 17 people in Ohio and 15 in Michigan.

The Michigan Department of Health said more than half of that state's residents affected by the illness report buying and eating ground beef from Kroger groceries.

A spokeswoman for Cincinnati-based Kroger said the beef was available in some Michigan and Ohio stores in late May and early June and is no longer on store shelves.

Of 24 cases confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 14 people have been hospitalized and one patient developed kidney failure. No deaths have been reported.

I would be willing to guess that if you screened ground beef across the country a large majority would come back positive for E coli. It's a very common bacteria... Cook your burgers long enough and it won't matter.

Exactly. That could have been in any food chain. Plus ground beef is an extremely common food item.

Seeing as Kroger pretty much dominates the grocery thing in Ohio, it's no surprise that more than half said they had purchased beef at Kroger.

I agree, but I also imagine there is some threshold of parts per million after which E. coli becomes a larger threat to a person's health.

btw-160F internal temp is what you want, but I prefer lower. I am such a rebel.

"Don't buy your bulk beef from OH/MI Kroger for a bit " But the article clearly states that all the beef in question is already off store shelves. So it's already eaten or in your freezer.

The beef we get from my in-laws might not be as tasty as USDA Prime, but at least I know it won't have E. coli.

I thought someone dropped into the meat grinder by accident and was added to the food supply. Oh well.
